no window or icon on kgpg startup

1) open commandline, enter "kgpg"
2) it prints

i) no icon exists (usually kgpg has some kind of an icon in the menu bar?)
ii) no window is brought up / alt-tab doesn't reveal any kgpg window
iii) it's not evident that kgpg is running at all, except that there is a process in the background

i think the workaround to this turned out to be to create a slide-out window on the bottom-left of my screen in gnome that *did* get kgpg icon.
