Bug Description

I am using Kubuntu Edgy on a Nexoc ES606 laptop.
FN+F3 gives me a OSD which says that sound is muted but it has no effect.
All the other FN keys are working just fine.

Output of xev, Mute Key pressed:
KeyRelease event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2600001,
    root 0x5d, subw 0x0, time 1966259779, (586,763), root:(589,790),
    state 0x0, keycode 160 (keysym 0x1008ff12, XF86AudioMute), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

sudo dmidecode --type system:
System Information
        Manufacturer: American Megatrends Inc
        Product Name: 255/259 Series
        Version:

Assigning XF86AudioMute to Kmix has no effect either.

Can you open KMix application and press the Mute key and see which Output channel is being changed (Master, PCM, Headphone...)? Here it changes "Master" channel and this works properly.
Do you expect mute on speakers or headphone jack?

Well, mute doesn't work on both laptop speakers and headphone.
When pressing the mute key nothing changes in kmix.
I have two channels, PCM and Front which control sound output.
The key for lower/higher volume is changing the PCM channel.
Appearently the PCM channel can't be muted - even in kmix.
Is that normal?
Seems that if all FN keys for sound were asigned to the Front channel,
everything would work.

I am experiencing the same problem on my laptop ( Asus A8JS ). I have selected 'PCM' as the Master channel for KMix and the laptop volume keys work for increasing decreasing volume. However it appears that the laptop mute key is muting the 'Headphone' (first in the list) output instead of 'PCM'.

I have the same problem on my Genius KB-21e Scroll keyboard and integrated Intel 915 audio chipset. Mute key is working, it shows me OSD, but it enables/disables "Headphone" channel, not "Front".

I have the same problem. I have the sound mixer panel applet and it shows the master volume bar changing colors when muting, although there is no change in how the music sounds. This was working perfectly just a few weeks ago. I don't remember what broke it... maybe feisty upgrade?

Dell E1705 with Kubuntu 7.10

So, more info: If you turn LFE all the way down, it works like expected. This all seems to be related to LFE (Bass channel). Apparently, its able to bypass the master volume, but PCM is not. so, my guess is, whatever audio backend we all are using routes LFE incorrectly. When mute is on, the sound is substantially different than with it off. I didn't discover LFE until recently, and I would like to have it work correctly. Incidentally, with LFE on, turning down master volume seems to have little effect, but turning the master down to zero effectively mutes it, even if you have LFE on.

Has anyone discovered a fix or workaround for this bug?

I have the same problem. The volume controls on my HP dv1668ea laptop (or those on my logitech MX610 mouse), they control the Headphone channel. Setting the global hotkeys for PCM to the volume controls doesn't have any effect, the controls stay sticked to the Headphone channel. Controlling the PCM manually from the KMix window does work though.

Same problem here:
Laptop XPS M1330
Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (snd-hda-intel model=3stack)
Kubuntu Gutsy (Beta)

Muting doesn't work while lowering and increasing does work fine.

I have the same problem in a hp pavilion dv2035us, the hotkeys for volume only affect the headphones and I don't know how to change it to PCM.

same problem on inspiron 9400 and ubuntu 8.10.

gnome's volume applet controls master. not LFE.

case buttons control LFE. not master.

master and LFE seem to "reach the speakers" independently. sliding up master gives a more treble sound and sliding up LFE gives a more bass sound.

if I connect headphones, the only control that has effect on what sounds in the headphones is the master. LFE has not effect at all in the headphones. however the sound in the headphones is not treble but a good quality one; with treble, mid and bass frequencies.
