When trying to upgrade the KDE SC to 4.8 i get the following message just after the download completes:
E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'kmail'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Kubuntu better. Does this still happen? If yes, can you post a more complete log output of the issue? Possibly add '-o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes' to the apt command if the line you posted is all you get.

Unfortunately, I workarounded this bug by removing kmail and installing it again after upgrading.

I tried to upgrade various combinations of installed packages and couldn't reroduce this and couldn't. Do you still have your apt history from back then in /var/log/apt/ ?

I now got same message. After upgrading from Kubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 had failed I did
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade in a console window and I do get:

Adding a task for kdepim in Ubuntu. This problem exists with the version of kmail in the archive (ref bug 992089)

There have been many changes in Kubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Kubuntu version. If you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running only once:
apport-collect 921946

and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
