I thought it was due to a kdenetwork upgrade that took place last night,
so I tried to downgrade kdenetwork to 4:3.3.2-5 (currently in testing)
with no effect. This is the output from running kmail under gdb:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Kmail simply segfaults no matter what I do. It just dies right away when I
attempt to start it. This happened (and keeps happening) after I did an
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday. Please
fix this as soon as possible.

I just (8:30 p.m. CST 7 July 2005) did an aptitude update and aptitude
upgrade, and now kmail won't start. If I attempt to run Kmail from the
command line I get the single error message "Segmentation fault". The weird
part is that I'm writing this message from Mail in Kontact which is just
Kmail embedded into a larger application, so I'm not certain what is going on
exactly. I've rebooted my computer completely, and I've noticed no other
applications acting strangely, so I am completely bewildered. Any help would
be appreciated, and if I can help out just ask.

Its been 9 days since this bug was first listed. Whats the trouble
with getting it fixed?
I would have thought this would be a rather major program that the
maintainer would have wanted to fix quickly.
But we don't seem to have had a word from him.

No KDE applications are currently buildable in unstable due to the C++ ABI

I have exactly the same problem with kdelibs and kmail. I can
get an older version of kdelibs4 and kdelibs-bin from
elsewhere and downgrade using dpkg -i, but apt-get
insists on having the latest version of these libraries,
when I want to install a package, it tells
me to run apt-get -f install which will upgrade the
kdelibs again to the version which breaks kmail.

 His this bug still open?

There is any way to correct this without compiling kdepim, that I already
tried without sucess and didn't have much sucess (don't have much time to
solve the presented problems)

I'm using debian unstable, and kontact to read email, but the mailto: links
from galeon and similars don't work.

There is any prevision on when will this be corrected?

Hello all.

After an upgrade a month ago KMail reliably segfalts. [Kaffeine also
segfaults upon quitting, or fails to quit and takes up 100% cpu until
manually killed.] I found this bug report already open, so I didn't write
one at the time.

What is confusing me is that all of the KDE-based libraries (with the
exception of kdelibs4) and the version of KMail itself are common with the
Debian Stable branch -- and yet it is reported that rebuilding the kdepim
package seems to fix the problem in the Unstable branch. Is there something
wrong with the current binary of the kdepim package in Unstable?

Rebuilding the kdepim package requires kdelibs4-dev which cannot be
installed due to dependency conflicts with libfam0 and libfam0c102.

Also as previously reported, Kontact seems to run just fine and seems to
contain all of the functionality that KMail had.
I thank the users that mentioned it, as I now have a workaround while I am
unable to run KMail.

I too confirm this bug. When it crashes there is no output. Strace
output also appeared to not be very useful. The fix mentioned above
does work:

If you are running Sid and have the kdelibs4 and kdelibs-bin version 3.3.2-7
installed:

1. go to snapshot.debian.net
(http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2005/05/24/debian/pool/main/k/kdelibs/)
and get version 3.3.2-6.1 of both these packages.

2. Run dpkg -i kdelibs4_3.3.2-6.1_i386.deb
It will fail to configure and give an error message about kdelibs-bin needing the later version.

3. Then run dpkg -i kdelibs-bin_3.3.2-6.1_i386.deb
and you will get a similar message that it fails to configure.

4. Finally, run dpkg --configure --pending and both packages will be configured. Kmail should now work.

Since today's update of kdelibs4 to 3.3.2-7, kmail segfaults at startup

problem (I do not have kontact installed but I have akregator and knode

I just (8:30 p.m. CST 7 July 2005) did an aptitude update and aptitude

exactly. I've rebooted my computer completely, and I've noticed no other
applications acting strangely, so I am completely bewildered. Any help would
be appreciated, and if I can help out just ask.

Rebuilding the kdepim source package, and installing the resulting lib*.deb
fixed the problem for me.

Its been 9 days since this bug was first listed. Whats the trouble
with getting it fixed?
I would have thought this would be a rather major program that the
maintainer would have wanted to fix quickly.
But we don't seem to have had a word from him.

No KDE applications are currently buildable in unstable due to the C++ ABI
transition.

Hi ppl,

 His this bug still open?

There is any way to correct this without compiling kdepim, that I already
tried without sucess and didn't have much sucess (don't have much time to
solve the presented problems)

I'm using debian unstable, and kontact to read email, but the mailto: links
from galeon and similars don't work.

There is any prevision on when will this be corrected?

 Thanks,

Subject: KMail broken, confusing bug

Subject: Fix described earlier works

I too confirm this bug. When it crashes there is no output. Strace
output also appeared to not be very useful. The fix mentioned above
does work:

If you are running Sid and have the kdelibs4 and kdelibs-bin version 3.3.2-7
installed:

1. go to snapshot.debian.net
(http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2005/05/24/debian/pool/main/k/kdelibs/)
and get version 3.3.2-6.1 of both these packages.

2. Run dpkg -i kdelibs4_3.3.2-6.1_i386.deb
It will fail to configure and give an error message about kdelibs-bin needing the later version.

3. Then run dpkg -i kdelibs-bin_3.3.2-6.1_i386.deb
and you will get a similar message that it fails to configure.

4. Finally, run dpkg --configure --pending and both packages will be configured. Kmail should now work.

Subject: Bug fixed now

Version: 4:3.4.2-1

This bugs are fixed now:

#320581 - kdelibs4: kmail crashes on startup with segmentation fault
#317098 - Kmail segfaults at startup after minor upgrade of kdelibs4
  #319135 - kmail: SIGSEGV QString::QString () from /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
#325092 - kmail: Kmail segfault with libqt3c102-mt but works fine with
libqt3-mt, but this situation isn't a livable one.
