kmail "details" button inoperative when startup fails [16.04 Xenial]

My kmail startup failed.

The message displayed is:

"The Akonadi personal information management service is not operational."

A "Details" button is displayed.

When I click the button it depresses but nothing happens.

I would have expected it would show a modal with some diagnostic information.

I encountered this while troubleshooting bug 1569651. So, if you want to duplicate this problem, introduce an error into /etc/xdg/akonadi/mysql-global.conf as shown in that bug.
