Bug Description

Binary package hint: krfb

Server, i.e. session that krfb runs from:

Ubuntu 8.10

Package: krfb
Architecture: i386
Source: kdenetwork
Version: 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu4

Client:

Win XP
Using either RealVNC or TightVNC
=============

If I enable krfb on my Kubuntu 8.10 system (KDE 4.1) the machine sends an initial frame to the client which is (sometimes) displayed properly, but it never gets updated. The mouse moves OK and is mirrored on the server, but no image updates are sent to the client.

Regards,
Steve

I can confirm too: exactly the same symptoms when connecting with krdc to krfb. I am running kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2 on both systems.

Same problem here, after making a fresh Kubuntu 8.10 install and updating to KDE 4.2 I setup krfb and tried to connect through a couple of clients for Mac and while I get the first image of the desktop it will not refresh.

connecting from linux mint kde4.2 felicia to mandriva 2009.1 kde4.2 also won't refresh correctly.

I can confirm this issue for Karmic with KDE 4.3.3. Server KRFB on x86, client KRDC on x64.

I confirm that a year after the bug has been reported, it is still the very same bug that happens.

Ubuntu 9.10 X86_64 for Krdc
Mandriva 2010.0 x86_64 for Krfb

Same problem here. Disabling the nVidia Graphics driver (version 185) allowed it to work properly.

Do all of you use the proprietary nvidia graphics driver?

Should the driver be disabled on the client or the server? Both have nvidia cards.

I have experienced this with a client running Nvidia and the host running non-Nvidia (Intel). I have not tried the reverse.

On Debian Sid I am using the Nvidia Driver. However I disabled "Desktop Effects" and this resolved the problem. I suspect the same occurs fir Kubuntu?

VNC obviously doesn't know how to handle a composited desktop.

I havent seen a fix but... I also can fix the issue to "some" degree.

For the person with the distorted view, changing to zlib (+xor) solves that interlaced look
also, i too can effect the desktop now by disabling the xwin desktop effects entirely

however i now get terrible color artifacting from any moving graphics like the cursor or the system load monitor for instance. I am using nvidia on both

it bears mentioning i am on kubuntu 8.10 and i believe nvidia 195 tried 180 still same issue

In Kubuntu 16.10, krfb is still only showing a "still image", however the mouse moves about the screen.
