Bug Description

KDE4 desktop in Intrepid is unacceptably SLOW on standard GPUs (Intel GMA9x5 for example) and totally unusable via remote sessions (VNC and NX)!

1. GUI updates always delayed.
2. Object redrawing takes sometimes a seconds, while garbage is displayed instead of objects in the middle.
3. Paging text in editors/browsers is hardly possible, seconds to get next page in Kate!
4. In VNC and NX sessions widgets partially missing or distorted.
5. Many GUI elements are over sized and leaves too little workspace in applications.

ALL OF THAT ON UP TO DATE DUAL CORE MACHINES, EVEN VISTA DOES ALL THAT BETTER!!!
NONE OF ABOVE IS CORRECT FOR KDE3!!!

I am back after being in a hole under a giant rock for months on end.
Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex using XDM and GDM is doing very, very, very well. Is
there a test script or information that I should be compiling/populating?

GOOD JOB so far.

If I built a box to crash and burn for the community, ( which i built for
that purpose) who would like to use it to test. I was thinking of trying

Let me know.

I'm experiencing the problems as eugenesan.

This happened after I upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10.

I made a screen shot, remote desktop viewer gives a better picture then krdc but it is also unusable.

By the way NX works ok for me.

So, only RDP and VNC are affected? or only RDP?

I only use VNC, I can't test RDP at the moment, maybe someone else who's reading this can try and report back.

I also have the same problem KDE 4.1 clean install intrepid yesterday. My laptop's one of the fastest around LG P300

2.4GHz Intel, Geforce 8600M, 2GB DDR2

i have same issues as eugenesan. Simply closing bug and dismissing is counter productive. I'm unable to test with jaunty since nvidia drivers fail to work and just crash KDE once session starts- its fine with kdm and session starts but once ANY window opens it will just lockup until kdm is stopped.

which makes me think it could maybe be a driver issue.

1. GUI updates always delayed.
2. Object redrawing takes sometimes a seconds, while garbage is displayed instead of objects in the middle.

> For me this is mostly opening new windows. A delay. Also accessing anything on the plasma dashboard is ultra delayed but then is normal speed once its in context. Clicking show dashboard is also ultra delayed taking a few seconds but leaving it is normal speed.

Closing windows is also delayed. Usually will display a bunch of garbage and then disappear.

When selecting desktop effects on 34 bit dual-core machines resizing of window is much slower than with compiz-fusion ; for gelatine effects it is quasi the same speed ; some options like destop on a cylinder or on a sphere cannot be activated maybe they are not present ; some others options when checked do not work ; I have removed all compiz packages just to make sure there was no compatibility problems ; I am wondering why to redevelop a KDE-4 3D desktop when compiz is available ; why not simply interface it ?

Read above bit machine ; some more information :
- now when activating 3D effect on desktop opening of a session takes for ever
- when at last it was possible to handle objects on the desktop I made some more tests : desktop mapped on a cube works fine though using Ctrl+F11 to activate it is to be banished and be replaced like with compiz with a compilation of keys + mouse drag on desktop where there is no objects ; with present option is is entirely disconnected from typical desktop actions.
- gelatine window is also working fine,
- but there is obviously a bug with resizing of window on the sides or corner of the window

I am waiting for some suggestions on the above anomalies from developers to pursue testing

I'm not sure how this bug report is relevant to freenx, is there any way to untag it. It is filling our message list with invalid, unrelated posts.
Article #4 above is a known issue with Windows remote sessions over NX client in 32-bit color. The linux remote sessions are fine. It isn't even relevant to NX, but X itself.

So.

Do these issues occur with desktop effects deactivated at all?
What graphics drivers are in use?
