Bug Description

Despite all the other samba discussions going on in general and in gnome, the kubuntu-desktop should simply download and install the samba server, when sharing a folder is request, hence it does not violate the ubuntu no open ports rules. Also using security should remain with the user, as I certainly do not intend to share with anyone whos on the net, i refrain from using smbpasswd in console, so there should be a sweet and simple tool to set up samba passwords and user accounts, making sharing less a pain than it is right now. Ive seen all the described above working like a charm in other distributions, though it should not be to hard to adopt it.

You get more attention if you choose a package that is related to your bug.

Thanks for your suggestion.

The work to enable easier file sharing with samba has already been done in the samba and pam packages (namely enable net usershare and add pam_smbpass to the pam authentification stack to keep password synchronized between the system and the samba password database). It's up to the application that create samba shares in kubuntu to use this. Reassigning to kdenetwork.

This has a spec, but it's a non-trivial amount of work.

Yes, I agree this could be a big pain, but I can offer a suggestion: try webmin download it from http://www.webmin.com/ the deb package, then install it you will also find that on their website they have a plugin sort-of thing for samba that makes creating user accounts, passwords and modifying things much easier.

This is where you find the plugin: http://www.webmin.com/standard.html

Then just download and install it

I appreciate your suggestion, but how will the standard kubuntu-user know about this? First go to launchpad and search for bugs?

That's another issue I didn't think about I will go on to Ubuntu wiki
and make a wiki page for it, that will definitely help...

Here you go I made a wiki page, and I understand your worries about a standard user finding this, we might have to talk to the documentation team about this so they can include this in system adminstration guide, I am pretty sure that a regular user might not even know about the wiki:

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/webmin

So for now I am making this one in process

Thanks

This tool, as useful as it is, doesn't change anything to the fact that samba sharing in a new Kubuntu install doesn't work out of the box with the provided KDE tools.
hence I think the bug is still valid, and Samba sharing has to be fixed, which is planned hopefully fot Kubuntu 10.04 (see the postponed task for Kubuntu 9.10 : https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Todo)

This really sounds like a feature request for (K)Ubuntu and not a Samba bug. Removing assignment to Samba Team.
