Bug Description

setting a global status message as "online" and then manually changing the status to "away" or "idle" makes the status message to disappear in my local application (but my contacts are still able to read the message). changing again the status to "online" makes the status message to disappear also from my contact's application.

Works for me on google talk/jabber.
Please provide any information vital to reproduce this issue, most importantly the type of IM network.

sorry for being so generic.
the protocol that causes this problem is MSN,
"local" application is kopete version 0.50.1 & KDE 4.0.2

I am unsure what your actual problem ist Fabio but let me try:
1. You are setting a status message in the main window at the bottom.
2. You change change your status from online to away.
3. The status message you set before goes away.

Is that correct?
If so I can reproduce this here and I think it is intended behaviour.

Thank you Lydia for your answer, that was more or less the problem I was reporting.
I don't know if it is the intended behaviour, but to me it seems very uncomfortable to set the message every time I change my status.
But, if it is the intended behaviour, then comes the second part of the problem.
The status message disappear at the first status change, but only in the local application (i.e. it is still "shouted" to my contacts, and visible to them), and it need a second status change to make it "really" disappear. This happens with different "remote" applications (for example msn messenger on windows, and adium on mac) and different protocols (msn and jabber) so it makes me believe that this problem is in kopete.
I hope to have been clearer, it is a complicated problem to explain :)

This bug is getting worser and worser in kopete-kde4!!! There's not a clear and safe way to set a status message, like "I'm happy", that stays there whichever status I select after.
Every IM client has this possibility and I don't understand why Kopete is programmed to behave in this odd way! I think that someone should mark this at least as whishlist!
