Bug Description

Product: kubuntu
Version: 5.04
Date:Thursday 21st of April

Did a "apt-get update" followed by a "apt-get upgrade" and got the following error when upgrading
kdelibs-data:

Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ... 76031 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace kdelibs-data 4:3.4.0-0ubuntu3 (using .../kdelibs-data_4%3a3.4.0-0ubuntu3.1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement kdelibs-data ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs-data_4%3a3.4.0-0ubuntu3.1_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/share/icons/default.kde', which is also in package knetworkconf
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs-data_4%3a3.4.0-0ubuntu3.1_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

That has caused a change on my wallpaper (defaults to kde's one), the window style (defaults to plastik), the
splash screen and the style of the konsole, which is now with background in white.

Still haven't been able to install that package.

I have the same problem using amd64
My solution was to uninstall knetworkconf, upgrade kdelibs-data, then install
knetworkconf again and it worked.

I was able use synaptic to remove knetworkconf and kubuntu-desktop, then install
kdelibs-data, then reinstalled knetworkconf and kubuntu-desktop.

After upgrading kdelibs-data I lost my Kmenu button, System Menu button, pager,
taskbar, system tray and clock! Some kde application settings were also lost
(e.g. my Konsole turned white). What exactly has gone on here? Surely a
security update shouldn't create this much havok!

Same thing here, including the loss of settings. I guess this is because removing knetworkconf also removed the kubuntu-desktop package.

Same problem on two Kubuntu PCs.

I worked around the problem with:
dpkg -i --force-overwrite
/var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs-data_4%3a3.4.0-0ubuntu3.1_all.deb
apt-get -f install

I don't know if problems will turn up?

Well, you have to add the applets to your kde panel again as well as reestablish
your background. 5 minutes.

This is not a solution. If you create a new user the settings are not the
kubuntu one anymore.
Besides, some features of kubuntu such as the automatic display of the icons
when you plug
an usb device won't work anymore.

I tried to reinstall kubuntu-desktop, aptitude asked me for the kubuntu CD-Rom
for this operation
but it didn't solve the problem.

Does someone found a solution for this ?

The setting to display device icons got turned off. You can turn it back on
using Control Centre.

Yep :)

1) apt-remove --purge kubuntu-default-settings (watch for its dependencies, you'll reinstall them
later)

2) rm -rf /etc/qt3

3) apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings (and every package which was removed)

My guessing is that having /etc/qt3/.qt_plugins_3.3rc.lock and /etc/qt3/.qtrc.lock during an
upgrade causes this (I don't know why, sorry)

Oops, I meant apt-get remove, you know :)

That counts for both the bugzilla and forumthreads.

this report describes two bugs in kdelibs:
first is the conflict with knetworkconf. the second one is the loss of system-wide kde settings
(/etc/kderc) (see also bug 16559). I took a short look on the package scripts: this error is
in /var/lib/dpkg/info/kdelibs4.preinst: there is a "rm -f /etc/kderc" in the upgrade section.
perhaps the original debian package generates /etc/kderc during package-configuration, but in
ubuntu /etc/kderc is a part of kubuntu-default-settings and should not be changed by any other
package.
