kapman has started running incredibly slowly

On an otherwise fully functional Ubuntu install (old Celeron M laptop, still going strong); Kapman has gone from running fast and fine to a refresh rate of what looks like 1 screen refresh per second or thereabouts... Presumably following a recent package update?
