Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

not sure this is the right package.

Kubuntu 9.10.
After latest upgrade, (probably second round of packages update after moving to 4.4), It is impossible to login.

Analysis:
Since KDM is up and running, I figure that there is no problem with the X system and the video driver (nvidia).
It seems like kwin cannot start.
When I login, I get a black screen with mouse on it.
When I login to safe more, I see briefly konsole, and the screen is back to KDM.
The only error report I could find relevant is from /var/log/kdm.log, but I can't upload it since I have no screen ;) (writing now from Windows).

I created an extra user, from the text screen (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and tried to log in this user, but the scenario repeat again.

Now I can't login to my KDE account, worse, I can't see any work around.

Please help!

Here is some more info.

I installed fvwm, so I'm now able to login into graphical environment and launch all KDE apps.

however when trying to replace window manager, using
> kwin --replace >& /tmp/kwin.log

there is a crash and I get back to login screen.

Here is /tmp/kwin.log
could not access kephald, falling back to QDesktopWidget
adding an output 0 with geom: QRect(0,0 1440x900)
kwin: Fatal IO error: client killed

What is 'kephald' ?
Could this problem be related to xrandr?
