Bug Description

My Konqueror Toolbar is missing the icons to change the view mode in Kubuntu latest test ISO with KDE 3.5.2. In Breezy, there were toolbar icons to switch into Tree View" and "Image Preview Mode" and other modes. I have checked through the toolbar configuration and found that the difference is an item called 'ActionList: viewmode_toolbar' is missing. This item is in the toolbars in Breezy and normal KDE 3.5.2 installations.

In the toolbar configuration window, the descriptions for this item says "This is a dynamic list of actions. You can move it, but if you remove it you won't be able to re-add it." The really strange thing is that when I run a VNC session on my computer, sometimes these icons show up on the toolbars in konqueror, but never on my normal desktop.

I do not know whether the view mode icons have been removed. I hope not, it is very annoying to not have a toolbar icon to switch view modes. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or what caused it?

Hello, I think that the missing icons are a consequence of a different konqueror configuration.
I was able to make them appear in the following way: open "System Settings" and choose "Panel", then, on the "Menus" tab check the "Konqueror profiles" box and apply the changes.
Close "System Settings" and, from the main "K Menu" button, choose "Konqueror Profiles" -> "Midnight Commander". A konqueror window will open, then, from the "Settings" -> "Toolbars" menu, check the "Main Toolbar".
The missing icons will appear, but only in this particular profile. To make them appear also in the normal "Kubuntu File Manager" profile you can remove the "Terminal Emulator" pane (right click on it) and one of the two View panes (right click on its bottom bar) and then, from the menu "Settings" -> "Save View Profile Midnight Commander ...", save the profile as "Kubuntu File Manager" (uncheck the "Save URLs in Profile" box in the popup window!).
You may need to logout from kde session and login again to make the changes effective.
It is interesting to see the differences from the default configuration file (/usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde-profile/default/share/apps/konqueror/profiles/filemanagement) and the new one (~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/profiles/filemanagement).
Another point is that, after the new configuration, the konqueror menu voice "Settings" -> Load View Profile" has disappeared.
I think that the default konqueror configuration should display the missing icons, since they are useful for quick changing of different view modes (as it is in breezy).

It seems that in the latest package versions the "Midnight Commander" profile has been removed. Don't know if this is a bug or a feature...
Anyway I post here the content of the file ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/profiles/filemanagement after the modifications I have described in my previous post. Replacing the default one with this content or creating a new file (if not present) should make the missing icons appear again.

(Please see the duplicate bug for my previous comments)

The buttons mysteriously reappeared previously, but I just closed konqueror and reopened it and they aren't there again and I can't get them back.

I have tried after a dist-upgrade today. The icons are still missing using the default konqueror profile. If you make a custom filemanagement profile, as described in my prevoius post, the icons will appear.
But this is indeed a usability bug.

Please add my vote to "please fix this bug." I dist-upgraded from Kubuntu Breezy, and a number of my personal configs got stomped.

There is no Midnight Commander profile on either of my Kubuntu systems.

A manual fix was posted for this on the Kubuntu forums at http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=5571.0; it tells how to edit konq-kubuntu.rc.

Another problem is there is no Delete function in Image View. This really gums up the works for me, as I use Konq's Image View extensively to manage my digital photos. I shall file a separate bug report for this, if there isn't one already.

Thank you for all your good work.

What info does this bug need? I'd like to add my vote too, and perhaps this posting:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=190258

That one (and what it links to) pretty much overlaps with what alrac posted, so they seem to have nailed down the location of the bug at least.

The point is we wanted to patch kdebase to get only 1 button instead of 3, since there is no reason in 3 buttons for the same functionnality.
I just finished the patch for this, and kubuntu-default-settings has been updated to fit this too.
I'll upload once beta freeze ends.

By 'fixed' do you mean there is only 1 button now instead of 3? I rather liked the three buttons. I've been battling this since going to Dapper and just using the menus which is annoying. Any chance we will go back to 3 buttons or is it a dead issue?

@footer:

No, it in the previous releases it wasnt there at all!

So I am too happy that after two releases it is finally fixed..

I liked the default three buttons more, too, but I am at least happy to have a button for one of the most common commands of Konqueror, instead having click myself through the menus..

Thanks!

The new 1 button for view modes is totally useless as it needs to be pressed about one second (an eternity) to be able to change the viewmode. Using the menu is about as fast as this.
Removing the timeout would maybe make this usable.

I like the original functionality that allowed quick (one click) change between three chosen view modes.

I agree that the ~1sec timeout makes this new button useless.

Hi!

I checked the patch (kubuntu_84_group_toolbar_viewmode_icons.diff) that makes the three buttons just one and have made a reverse patch for the .desktop files. This patch does not affect the binary changes but brings back the three buttons.

To apply:
cd /usr/share/services/
sudo patch -i /path/to/un84.diff

Just a quick update ... I just updated to EdgyEft. Our friend the single icon with delayed drop down is back. :-( However ... I have some good news! Your reverse patch still works Kåre! I'm SOOOOO happy!!!

Feisty will probably be back to the standard 3 buttons mode.
The delay will then not be an issue.

Otherwise I want suggest the people to use Dolphin.
Dolphin is the new easy file manager for KDE 4.0 - but it is also available right now.
Dolphin recognized the needing of a easy way to switch view modes and made it obvious to do this.
For easy fast file operations its great - Konqueror is still there for some stuff who needs a more feature-rich app.

The patch works in Gutsy also. It's only easier to switch view modes in D3lphin, because switching was patched to be worse in Konqueror (in attempt to make it simpler).

But I soon recognized something I really cannot believe even after weeks and months - there is no option to do "sort by filetype" or a "filetype" column in the detail view in Dolphin?
This must be bug?!?

The one button option would be a wonderful idea if it were a switch -- if you're using icon view, clicking on the button would switch you do detailed list view and if you hold that one second you'd get a menu with other list types. Same for list to icon view.

The old 3-button solution was way better. I mostly switch between icon and list modes, and now i've been struggling for months: it's clear that there's no getting used to it once you tried the old method. Balance between ergonomics + functionality isn't an easy equation.

I'm happy to say that Kåre's un84.diff patch works fine on Hardy Heron 64-bit Kubuntu (3.5.9 kde). I just patched it. Not sure why I didn't do it long ago as I've been just sort of getting used to the 'new way'. But I liked the old way so much better so I'm glad to have it back with the patch.
