Bug Description

System: Kubuntu 8.04 (x86_64), KDE 4.1 rc

Dolphin 4 crashes each time I move the mouse-pointer in Dolphin to a video-file (e.g. avi, mpeg). The bug is not bug #23833 or #23837.

I installed the package libkonq5-templates but that does not help.

Error-message:
The application Dolphin (dolphin) crashed and caused the signal 6 (SIGABRT)

Error details:
Application: Dolphin (dolphin), signal SIGABRT

Same problem here, almost fresh install of KDE 4.1 RC1.

Doesn't seem to happen in konqueror.

I have the exact same problem here. Seems to be related to the preview function in the INFORMATION frame on the left hand side of Dolphin. If I close INFORMATION down it will work just fine browsing the directory.

This bug just happened to me too in a fresh installment of kde 4.1 final but is not only with video-files but with any large file too (it happens with .iso image too and other large files) and it not crash immediately but it hangs for 1 minute or so but if i do the same thing some more times it will eventually crash.

I agree with kmartinsson, the problem is the Information panel, when i'd close this panel Dolphin works well.

Too bad they didn't fix this in the RC1.

PD: sorry for any misspelling, the English is not my native language.

Jeremy LaCroix (jlacroix82-deactivatedaccount) wrote :

I have been going around in circles with the KDE developers regarding this problem.

We have confirmed that this problem is NOT a bug in KDE 4.1, it's a bug in Strigi. The problem is that Ubuntu hasn't packaged the version of Strigi that was made to be used with KDE 4.1, instead, the version of Strigi that is included isn't compatible with KDE 4.1.

The Ubuntu developers should upgrade to Strigi 0.5.11 right away. d

The bug report, which all developers should read is here:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164296

Here are some quotes from that bug report from the KDE developers:
---
"You can update up to KDE 4.5 (exagerating), but it won't change the situation.
The bug was in strigi, so what you need to upgrade is *strigi*, at least the version 0.5.11."
---
"Disabling Strigi indexing won't prevent KDE from using libstreams and libstreamanalyser (which are parts of Strigi).

Once again, this bug was fixed in Strigi. If you still experience it, report it to your distribution. That only means they didn't include the patches in Strigi 0.5.9 or that Strigi wasn't updated to 0.5.11."
---
"Dolphin uses libstreamanalyzer to get metadata out of files. libstreamanalyzer is part of strigi. Version 0.5.9 of strigi has a bug that causes a crash when analyzing some avi files. This is fixed in 0.5.11 which was released to be used with KDE 4.1.

A workaround is to delete strigita_avi.so if you have a strigi version older than 0.5.11."
---

I am urging whomever is in charge of Strigi to upgrade it in Ubuntu 8.04 (or any affected system).

Alright!! Just a moment ago Adept send me the update of strigi and the other packages needed to solve the bug and i can say now that the problem is solved, now dolphin works great with the information bar active.

    Thanks for the help.
