kubuntu menus scrambled

Bug Description

I have installed kubuntu fresh on a system with the filesystem split up as:

/ , /var , /tmp , /home .

once the system is installed, the KDE menus are mangled as shown in the attached screenshot.

as an example, the menu for kcron reads:

[IMG] _: Entries in K-menu: KCron app name, Task Scheduler desc...

Some menus end up OK (mostly menus added after the initial install -- but not all such applications).

This error seems to have existed since at least Tribes 5 (the first version I installed), but I thought that somebody had obviously noticed it.

About the only things that I can think that I have done differently than most testers is:
1: virgin install (not an upgrade), and
2: splitting the filesystem ( / , /var, /tmp , /home ) [intent is to separate fast-changing folders from /root ]

Do you still have this problem w/ the final release?

Yes. Final install is still broken.

I did both a split partition install and a single partition install.. both resulted in mangled menus.

Other settings:
 Language: English
TZ: Canada/Vancouver
kbd: US English

partitioning: Manual. -- either / /var /tmp /home or single slice for entire system.

Once again: both systems were clean installs -- not upgrades.
I can do an upgrade install (starting from ubuntu, though, not kubuntu). I'll see what it does.

(hmm... I MAY have a kubuntu 7.04 system to upgrade....)
In either case, I probably won't be able to do the upgrade installs until the weekend.

One thing to note is that many (but not all) of the packages that I installed after the initial install seem to have 'normal' menus. (and a few of the initially installed packages also had normal menus after the initial install.)

What do you mean by splitting the filesystem? Are you making separate partitions for the ones you listed above?

darkonc (samuel-bcgreen) wrote :

Yes. My standard method of partitioning is to create separate partitions for
/
/var
/tmp
/home

The intent is to minimize writes to the root partition. (not such a necessity, now that we have logging filesystems, but the paranoid in me likes the extra security)
If I was being seriously paranoid I'd also turn on noatime for /.

However, I tested it both ways. I did one install with the partitions as above, and a second install with a single partition for everything. Both of them had the same problem, so I'd say that the only obvious variables I can see are the locale info and the fact that I'm doing a clean install as opposed to an update.

The CD I installed was (MD5sum)
ae9b209fe4b9caf545fa2011631de797 kubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso

When I installed it, however, it claimed to be the development version.
do some sites still have an outdated image?

Possibly related:
I just added an item for Firefox with Profile-manager. I did it by using KDE Menu Editor and copying and pasting the regular firefox menu item (which is one of the ones NOT scrambed).
WHen I was done, the new item was scrambled.

Changing this to KDEBASE package. Are you able to test this in intrepid to see if this is still a problem?

Thanks,
Jonathan

I'll try and get around to downloading and testing it by the weekend.

Is this valid with 3.5.10 or 4.1?

What languages are you using?

It <b>seems</b> to be fixed, but I ran into a host of other problems. (mostly usability issues), but they included adept_installer. breaking itself. I'll attach the file this-sucks.txt Please file appropriate bugs in the appropriate places.

BTW: the way that I did this test was to buy an 8GB flash drive and do the install on there. (split partitions on the flash drive)

The work is all done in US English.
