I have the same problem. On my system I have 3 hard drives, and the device icons for these do not work as they did in 3.5.6. However, I have found it possible using kwikdisk, and setting up new desktop icons via Create New>Link to Device, to re-establish them plus their 'off-on' functionality. Using the 'atime' flag in /etc/fstab against these drives is also important.
But this is very much a work-around. At boot, the icons do not appear until I use Kwidisk to mount or dismount them.
