Bug Description

Binary package hint: konqueror

Running Kubuntu Feisty.
With Konqueror open as a file manager, pressing Ctrl + N opens a new file manager window. Unfortunately the new window is missing the Location Toolbar, the Location menu and the Bookmarks menu. Also, the menu items that are visible are not in the correct order. This is repeatable on my system. Screenshot attached.

I can confirm this problem.

It started happening after I upgraded to Kubuntu Feisty. The strange thing is that sometimes Konqueror behaves like it should, and other times (when opening Konqueror, or just a new window) as have the problem as described above. I could not make out a pattern when exactly it happens.

It happened to me too. In my case, this is how Konqueror looks all the time not only with Ctrl+N(!), so it is a huge problem for me. I just submitted a bug (possibly duplicate of this one):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/114947

Any ideas how to fix it ?

I just seem to have "fixed" this problem by some manipulation of the view profiles.
In Settings/Configure View Profiles... I had two profiles listed:

            Simple Web Browser (I think)
            Web Browsing

I deleted "Web Browsing" and Renamed "Simple Web Browser" to "Web Browsing"

(I'm not sure about the name of the "Simple Web Browsing" profile as it is now gone,
and I can't remember).

The way I noticed this was to when I added the "Konquerer Profiles" applet to the
Panel, and then I could create new windows using the various profiles, and I
noticed that the standard "Web Browsing" profile was messed up.

OK, I now have a bit more info on this.

I have just recently changed my two main workstations from kubuntu dapper to feisty (7.04).
In both cases, I completely re-installed from scratch (reformatting '/'), *but* keeping my
own personal files on another partition. That means that ~/.kde/..., etc., was retained from
dapper, and the new installation did not touch anything in there.

After the change to feisty, in konquerer on web pages, when I would right click a link then
select "Open in New Window", I would get a wind with the location toolbar missing, the
items in the menu bar in a different order, The Location and Bookmarks menu missing amoung other
things (as mentioned by the first not above). When I would "Open in a New Tab", then "Detach Tab",
the new window would be OK.

My first note above describes what I did on my first box.

On my second box here is what I did.

-- In "Settings / Load View Profiles" I noticed two: "File Management" and "Kubuntu Web".

-- Start a fresh konquerer in the normal way (clicking desktop icon). The resulting
    window is OK.

-- Select "Settings / Save View Profile". I saved it as "Kubuntu Web" (I.e., overwriting the existing
    profile).

Now, right click/Open in New Window creates the proper window.

So it all has to do with view profiles, but thats about the limit of my knowledge.

I'm surprised not to see more reports of this problem, but perhaps it has to do with the
fact that my user files were retained from dapper.

cheers

I don't know if it is relevant, but I performed the Feisty upgrade logged on as a different user - not the one experiencing the problems. I was actually upgrading the system of a friend, so I used my own account to do the upgrade. When I log on as the user which performed the upgrade (myself), everything is fine. When my friend logs on as himself, Konqueror is broken. Could it be that the upgrade tool works only on the current user's profile ? That would be a major problem, but one that not necessarily many people would see.

I took the basic idea from your advice about the profiles and managed to fix the problem. Thanks! However I didn't follow it exactly. Instead, here is what I did:

- First of all, my Konqueror didn't have the "Settings / Load View Profiles" menu item at all ! Talk about unpleasant surprise :-) Fortunately, when started as a web browser more menus appeared and I managed to get to the view profiles dialog box.

- I noticed that in the _working_ user's settings, the view profiles were called "Web Browsing" and "File Browsing". In the _broken_ user they were called "Kubuntu Web Browsing" and "Kubuntu File Browsing".

- I loaded "Kubuntu File Browsing" and saved it again. From that moment on Konqueror started working fine in File Browsing mode.

- I renamed "Kubuntu Web Browsing" to "Web Browsing".

Our experiences were very similar. I installed feisty as a new installation and during the process created an "nholtz" account for myself. After installation, I repointed my newly created account to use my personal files from before, by manually editting /etc/passwd and changing the home directory. So in effect, my account became like your friends account, not touched by the update or install procedure, and then my konqueror was broken just as it was in your friends account.

So it does look like, as you say,

"the upgrade tool works only on the current user's profile ? That would be a
major problem, but one that not necessarily many people would see."

I really don't trust installtion or update procedures with my personal file space, so I always try to keep them out of the way and hidden during new installations.

I also noticed a number of different names in the profiles on a couple of different machines, and I don't remember ever changing them before ... its a bit of a mystery.

Glad you got it to work. Those broken windows were a real pain for a few days ...
