Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace
The kdm init script should support the "status" action.
There is a concentrated effort underway by the Ubuntu Server Team to add a "status" action to as many of the common init scripts as possible. See:

Patch updated. The last upload depended on lsb-base >= 3.2.14. This was an ugly cut-n-paste error. Should have been 3.2-14. Sorry.
