Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

Using Kubuntu Intrepid ibex.
kdebase 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu2

After adding some widgets, plasma started to crash each time i tried to start KDE, or run plasma.
I Added: lunar widget, show desktop widget, firefox icon, seamonkey icon and konqueror icon.

Removing file ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc fixed the problem.

I have a backtrace and a copy of the problematic plasma-appletsrc file.

I am facing this same problem (not really a crash but like in the other duplicates of this bug a white and grey screens with some black boxes as if some applets trying to load, and then nothing).

I am using kdebase-workspace 4.1.1-0ubuntu3 and I removed the plasma-appletsrc file and the problem persists.

I created a new account to have a fresh .kde and still the same problem.

I also have an ATI card (3400 series) in a Dell Studio 1535 laptop.

Hi to all im new here and in Kubuntu 8.10 and excuse my english.
Ive just installed Kubuntu 8.10 and I came here from: kde bugs and it happened to me the same: I dragged a link to a linux blog to the desktop and I noticed that dont appear in the folder "Desktop", why? It has to drag to the Desktop field to that appear in Desktop folder?
Besides, as referred above, I just installed Firefox 3 (as Konqueror 4.13 dont show the plugin/function Archive web to save webs with pictures and dont play flash videos even flash plugin is installed) from Adept Manager and added a Firefox icon to the panel. When I restart my PC I get the error Fatal Error: Plasma Crash: (see attachment)
I read the solution: remove ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc but I don't know how to type ~ and what it means, which folder I mean, and I dont know what is this file, what it do and Im afraid that what will happen if I delete it. I'll loose all the icons in the panel ? And what this only happened whith Firefox 3 and not with other icons? Is cause firefox 3 is from Ubuntu and the others are from Kubuntu ?
Please help me, Im new in Kubuntu 8.10, idont know how to do orders with keyboard in Linux (only DOS) and everytime I load KDE the same error appears and I can't use it.

Hello Gerard, that file you attached is not valuable, that is a backtrace, but it is not useful if you haven't debuggin symbols installed.
To can obtain a good backtrace, install debuggin symbols by installing "kdebase-dbg" package and reproduce the crash.
What version of KDE are you running? you can view it checking the version of "kdebase-bin" and "kdebase-plasma" packages you have installed in Adept.
It is strongly recommended to install recommended updates and security updates for Intrepid, please be sure you have these updates installed.
This place is only to report bugs in the software, please for assistance, visit Ubuntu Forums, or another Open Source community at:

Ok I read in Wikipedia about ~ and says: Tiene como correspondencia en el código ASCII 126. That means has to be typed Alt + 126 ? In Windows has a Character Map but in LInux I dont see it any.
when I copied that error was the lines that appeared me at startup and at the end says: Adjunte (enclose? I translate from spanish) la siguiente información a su informe de error. So I enclose this. Ok backtrace mean how to reproduce a crash?
The only way to run Adept is from Alt F2 but appears (sorry I don have time to translate all):

No se pudo obtener el bloqueo de escritura en la caché, se recurrirá al modo de sólo lectura. No podrá instalar, eliminar o actualizar los paquetes. Sin embargo, podrá buscar en la base de datos de paquetes y navegar por ellos.
Al parecer usted no cuenta con suficientes permisos para instalar o quitar programas. Puede necesitar ejecutar este programa como usuario root (o con kdesudo) para tener acceso de escritura.

I click on Aceptar and then appears information of Adept and below various files that dont know what means. In which folder I search kdebase-bin" and "kdebase-plasma" packages ?

Thanks for the links (why is the help separated of this?) I need to read a lot...
Yes first Time I installed Kub8.10 Adept says when I connect internet that 245 pakages where available and I installed all!

Perhaps do you mean that is recommended to update to KDE 4.2 Beta? But if I have problems with this official version I'll die with a beta! I never installed one! I read on http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.2-beta2.php that has

"Significant refinements of Plasma and KWin, the KDE workspace

The KDE 4.2 series will offer considerable improvements in stability, feature-completeness and performance over its predecessors in the KDE4 series.
The Plasma desktop shell has gained many feature that users were still missing in earlier KDE4 revisions."

All of this means that I at least get rid of this annoying message/crash/bug ?
I'll loose all my data and programs/apps in KDE 4.1.3?

PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME, IM REALLY MESSED (confused) AND DONT KNOW WAHT TO DO !

What? and what is recommended for? You say me I must upgrade but take a look on that! I dont dare to update after reading that!
"This beta will be followed up by a release candidate on January 6th..."
What is a release candidate? OK Im reding this: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fases_del_desarrollo_de_software#Versi.C3.B3n_candidata_a_definitiva but hey! its 11 January and still is in Beta? We are sorry for all your problems, Gerard, I don`t know if a new KDE 4.1 revision (bugfix) will be released some day.
Really KDE 4.1 is not very mature, and Kubuntu 8.10 have many issues by this. Try to not use problematic widgets.
KDE 4.2 final version is expected for the end of January, be patient, you will can install it in your Kubuntu 8.10 if you want.
I hope for you to have a better experience with KDE 4.2 and with the future Kubuntu version 9.04 which will be released on April.

Yeah Youre sorry Eagle, but you didnt answer the most simple things, perhaps you find it elemental, but note that Im using Linux-Kubuntu ONLY from August 2008. Perhaps I dont have time/feel like to learn the basics. I was so busy and tired of Windows bugs and to ask for help in english (as you noted Im spanish) that I changed to Linux thinking there dont happen. Altough removing Windows XP (yes its wrong and ugly talk of ite here) virus is simple (not adware), seemed like last yeaar I did a Windows registry cleaning (Thank Godness, or Saint Stallman..that Linux dont have !) and I ruined the registry. I think that was the reason for everytime I click on an icon all dissapear (sys tray) and restart, I think cse I dont know cause anybody in Avast said me the reason, perhaps I didnt find well, but Im tired again...

Well and what this have to do with this problem?, okok, when Windows XP (and I swear that I HATE to mention this name, Furthermore here) crashed it dont have any tool to report the BIG BUG, so I have to sort out my life in the Interminable (or Neverending?I dont know the difference...) INTERNET, making find the solution a hard work, not to mention post a message in Micro$oft forums...But with Kubuntu, KDE bug system management this is more simple and easy to find a solution ! This is the 1st time I post to ask for help in Linux (many other things I resolved for myself last year during installlation) and youre the 1st person to answer me. And though you didnt answer me all the basic things I discover it and inform me from myself. And I do it cause I LOVE FREE SOFTWARE AND ALL RELATED. Without this love and enthusiasm (the same all free-contributor, and same I feel for other scienc)es) and the help of Wikipedia and Wordreference (for translations) I cant do things so basic as put a ~ (thanks to Wiki, in my keyboard dont appear and has to be typed with AltGr+4) and even understand computing terms of bug, debug, debugger, backtrace, SIGSEGV and more...So although In the beggining I was a bit dissappointed and confused for all that bugs-find solution then I think perhaps (again) you wnt to I find the maximum of answers from myself and (,as Morpheus to Neo), show the gates (links) to I find more of them...So I appreciate that and thank you (and while I'm at it to ALL CONTRIBUTORS OF FREE SOFTWARE HERE AND IN THE WORLD) for the help, so please Eagle, dont apologize youself, Im ashamed...Your a master for me (the 1st in Linux), and a master never (or almost) have to apologize..sure youre doing a great job, but anybody is GOD or perfect so Come on! Keep doing good like that!

So after all of this (I know that is not the place but I really need to say it for 1st time) and descend to Earth, regarding to this BUG, Ill say that at last I found that f...errrr file! I didnt know that Linux (like Winbugs) have HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS! Probably cause I didnt see them..hehe. So I learnt (stepbystep) how to put ~ first and then how to make visible those files and appeared! (in fact when then I realised that I can copypaste all the location, but I want to learn from basics, and hidden files appeared too). I deleted it, restart (close sesion) and the VO...

NOOOOOOOOOO !!!!! 8 hours have last my joy ! This morning when I woke up I started to custom my desktop again, but I was cautious and ONLY ADD A FAST START FIREFOX ICON TO THE PANEL. I restarted and then CRASH again ! It is like when an horror movie is ending and suddenly the monster its still alive and scares you ! OKOK, relax, breath,calmm...uf, I went to ~/.kde/share/config/ and DADA! the plasma-appletsrc possessed file is here again !! How? KDE created it again when I altered my desktop? I deleted it again but then I think that this is not the solution, or the bugfix not? as I cant just add a simple icon to the panel (not a plasmoid to the desktop). It should have been a difference to icons and plasmoids, so wont this type of crasshes happen again ? I examined the problematic file searching some line that appear Firefox 3 but I cant find it (I think in removing that line should fix it, but then I realised that though therre will be one, probably KDE created it again?). So I think that the only solution is that I have to be brave and update to KDE 4.2 Beta 2, ill think that in KDE.org appear information on how to do it, as Adept dont update from KDE 4.1.3. As this is a beta I'll backip my data, just in case...

also, so you don't leave knowing nothing more than before: ask google for 'ABI compability', that is what is broken, and can only be fixed by recompiling the appropriate plasmoids.

over and out.

MaxSolo=thanks, Finally I updated to KDE 4.2 Beta 2 and lets me adding the damn Firefox 3 icon, as other like Sys Settings. I dont understand how a function that worked wrell in KDE 4.1.2 under Kub 8.04 not worked in KDE 4.1.3 under Kub 8.10...an update is to fix bugs not creating new ones isnt it?
And now I can see other icons of folder I choose, and I can resize the field that contains all. I can now create documents, folders and shortcuts in it. But most of plasmoids dont work, and jams KDE, forcing me to exit with CtrlAlt (thanks that exists!). I can only add a Calendar adn the default Notes (postit). Testing widgets I delete by accident the Task Manager and adding it causes blok sistem, I exit and restart X but there isnt! I have to change apps from Alt Tab. And besides a little bug that Ive been observed from KDE 4.1.3 and remains on KDE 4.2 Beta 2 is that if I choose 1024ppp resolution (1200 is too little things and fonts) when I restat KDE sets resolution to max (1200pp).
Dolphin has many bugs when sending items to garbage or moving it from one folder view to other (when splittting), Ill will search in KDEbugs for that.

Harald SHITter (or maybe I say crapper?), I call you like this as you call "crap load of pointless information" my last post, so that saddens me cause I wrote it with all my soul...Youre right to say thats not the place to say all of that but that was a GRATITUDE FOR EAGLE FOR HELPING ME (a bit long yes), prob you find it pointless but I guarantee that not for me and Eagle. Were humans (remember? UBUNTU IS LINUX FOR HUMAN BEINGS, you use it?) and humans when someone helps us is POLITE (especially for 1st time) to THANK hte other. I dont know a crap when you say: "also, so you don't leave knowing nothing more than before" and then "ask google for 'ABI compability', that is what is broken, and can only be fixed by recompiling the appropriate plasmoids." Even reaading what Wikipedia says to ABI I dont understand, again, a shit. Can you explain it for me here or in other place? Mail..but, ey dont waorry man, seems that was fixed when updating. Updating, thats Im gonna do now I see icon Adept is changing alerting me that new updates are available...

This is a true advise to all participants of the dispute.
Gerald, please, just be patient. I have a great conclusion on the topic.
EagleScreen, Harald Sitter - your bahaviour on the forum is the exact reason overall for Microsoft to be and continue to be, just because they are trying to CARE. You are smart. O'k. Open source and Open society is not the openness to figure out who is pissing higher.
This is just an opportunity to CARE and PARTICIPATE.
Back to the topic.
I tried several variations of KDE from 4.1.2 through 4.1.85 (aka 4.2 beta 1) to 4.1.96 (aka 4.2 beta 2) on kUbuntu Intrepid and Jaunty. The conclusion is:
1. Plasmoids and Desctop effects are POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS in all possible variations, so anyone can use them at own risk. Results are unpredictable. Resume is - do not use it on the main computer. Best practice - virtual WS.
Gerald - some salsa of bug-tracking: I'm running Windows 7 (build 7000 x64) on VMware 6.5.1 x64 on kUbuntu x64 Intrepid w. KDE 4.1.96 (4.2 b2) on Sony Vaio FW Supercharged.
Still alive. Regards.

You refer them or me? Sorry my english but I dont understand, and what you mean with CARE? take care? or take attention?
You are smart. O'k. Open source and Open society is not the openness to figure out who is pissing higher." this is not a competition not? Yeah, I only wanted to care and participate. Ill read the link of code of conduct and have in mind to post next time, asking in forums first for help and then here..ooh god I think that I started perhaps from the end not? Please understand is too difficult for me, understanding english, posting, understanding anwers, doing bug fixing...

But when I updated to KDE 4.2 Beta 2 in properties>about appeared (KDE 4.1.85) ? Sure you arent confused? So then I updated to KDE 4.2 RC1 and appeared (KDE 4.1.96). See attaxhment of capture...
Yeah I agree with you! I wouldn talk about that but I have to REINSTALL 4 TIMES KUBUNTU IN THE BEGGINING! for the fkg (sorrry) EFFECTS ! I enabled them without enbling first the propietary nVidia drivers and my screen turned black! And the other way if I unabled prop drivers with effects enabled I get the same!! No I dont dare to enable it, I wouldnt see the famous cube...The othe time i reInstalled without formatting and the problem wasn fixed (all black after login).
"Resume is - do not use it on the main computer. Best practice - virtual WS." I only hacve 1 computer ! WS? Do you mean that? http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/WS-Security.
Hey me name is GeRard! jaja some salsa? what? New Windows 7 !! And vista? Virtualization.mm interesting..but u need a gret machine to run that not? Im only have a Sempron with 2 512MB DIMMs...my mother board from 2006 seems to support 64 bit but I dont test it. Virtualization is only for 64bits architecture not?

Eagle: What? Do you read my last post ? "I updated to KDE 4.2 RC1 (KDE 4.1.96)". After 6 posts and updating you ask me waht plasmoid crashes? Your help comes late, do you read that post?: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase-workspace/+bug/258861/comments/20
Is the Task Manager, perhaps you refer to next post, in wich I dont mention it, sorry. But, I repeat, when updating to last ver that bug and others as adding Firefox icon to panel was fixed. At last ! I dont test other widgets that failled in prev versions, again as effects, I dont dare...I need the computer for work and I was thinking, if this wasnt fixed, using Windows XP again. But now at least (last?) I can work.

Harald: man, I dont understand you again: "Push off bug"?

As I see some confusion of all this bugs and versions related I do a little review from KDE versions from KUBUNTU 8.04 to 8.10 bugs and actions taken:

KUBUNTU 8.04 with KDE 3.5.9 as default (updated to 10 and then to KDE 4.1.2)
- Task Manager failed and System Tray causing a complete panel caos, same on KDE4 (prhaps cause sharin files/folders with kde3?)

KUBUNTU 8.10 with KDE 4.1.3
Plasma crahhses when adding fast start icons to taskbar and dragging shortcuts to desktop.
update to KDE 4.1.85 (KDE 4.2 Beta 2)
Fixed all above but still some plasmoids crashes (CPU, net, RAM, etc) and the Task Manager
(I didnt update to KDE 4.1.3 as I updated to KDE 4.2 Beta 2)
update to KDE 4.1.96 (KDE 4.2 RC1)
What the hell? After updating and restarting a fatal crahsh like above appear ! That is an update or an UNUPDATE? And this is a Release Candidate? I thought dissapointed...
I delete (as said here) plasma-appletsrc file, nononon, I move to other folder for if it worse...restart and crash again!
As in previous crashes I learnt to control KDE and lauch apps with AltF2 that wasnt too bad...in fact my sistem runs faster as KDE is not loaded!!
Ok the next day updates where available of some apps but ey! Wait a moment, some apps show ver 4.185 insted of 4.1.96. How it is possible if I just updated from last verson? Ok I clik on update, restart and the desktop appear ! a new plasma-appletsrc was created (I must to delete older?). I add icons to pamnel and worked well. Something that annoys me is that when I choose Leave from right click menu or sutdown from KMenu dont Shtudown! Instead exits sesion and I have to select shutdown from KDM menu or Alt S and select (again!) Shutdown! 3 or 4 times! This didnt happen before so is a bug?

Bye.
