Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde4admin

Hello,

i cannot change the background image of the kde4 login screen. i am using kubuntu with kde 4.0.5 always the
latest version provided. i started the sysytem settings app with

andy@laptop:~$ sudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings

after the app started i go the "advanced" -> "login manager" -> background
the i select the picture radio button and open the file dialog. after selecting the
image the drop down list stays empty. on the xterm console i can see the
following messages after selecting the image :

andy@laptop:~$ kdeinit4: Got EXEC_NEW 'kio_thumbnail' from launcher.
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-andy" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Link points to "/var/tmp/kdecache-root"
QFSFileEngine::open: No file name specified
' file: '
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
  Major opcode: 20 (X_GetProperty)
  Resource id: 0x3c03679
systemsettings(8243) KCMultiWidget::apply: "system" "system"

looks like it is a permission problem even though i started the application with
sudo and entered the password.

the permissions is /var/tmp look like
drwx------ 11 andy andy 4096 2008-06-21 17:19 kdecache-andy
drwx------ 5 root root 4096 2008-06-21 17:05 kdecache-root

andy@laptop:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

if you need more information tell me.

cheers,
andy

The permissions-related message looks rather harmless. This, on the other hand, looks like something that could cause the problem you're experiencing:
QFSFileEngine::open: No file name specified

I can't reproduce this issue in KDE 4.1.1. Could you upgrade with the instructions provided here: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.1.1 and retest the issue?
You shouldn't need to use sudo to start systemsettings since there will be a password prompt when you try to enter the login manager module.

No need to reproduce, it's going to end in another awesome issue. Marking as duplicate of the new one.
