I had updated the system only about an hour before the crash, so the packages should be up to date. Please advise how to continue. Should I install phonon-backend-gstreamer?

Thanks, Jonathan, but how to run Plasma in gdb? Should I just substitute "plasma" for "<program>"? I would imagine that I would have to kill plasma first, no? But then I would lose Konsole. Please advise. Thank you.

Yes, substitute plasma for <program>
Konsole won't go anywhere. If you accidentally minimize it, you can press alt-tab to bring up a windows list, where pressing tab will cycle through the open windows.
