I've attached a file from /var/crash that (hopefully) outlines what is happening. I've experienced this crash on both Xubuntu Gutsy Gibbon AMD64-alternate and -I386-desktop cd. The first test was from the iso dated 2007-06-05.1, and the second test was from the live cd iso - dated 2007.06.06 (the i386 iso).

Thanks for your help.

dbus-launch is now in dbus-x11, so that needs to be depended on now.

Oh, I'll install it. Thanks!
But This help message should be fixed in any case.

installing the dbus-x11 package fixes this problem on Xubuntu Gutsy, tribe 1. Thanks, Martin.

I show this as being fixed in my clean Tribe 2 candidate install of Xubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, 20070626.1.

Kubuntu Tribe 2 still has the problem when trying to install kde4

(Another effect of this dependency problem is that rhythmbox fails to see audio cds. On startup it reports dbus-launch is missing in its stderr output, and the GUI menu item Music->Scan Removeable Media then does nothing. A dbus-x11 install fixes it. I am using a Gutsy Tribe 3 installation with regular updates.)

This is still a problem in gutsy. Installed a fresh tribe 5 and added kde4 via Adept. starting brings up the error on dbus-launch. Installing dbus-x11 fixes but this package should be included in the dependency list.

Gutsy Tribe 5 (amd64) here, same problem, same solution. The dbus-x11 package should definitely be made a dependency.

dbus (1.1.1-3ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * debian/dbus.postinst: Bump version number for rc symlink fix transition,
so that we also do it for feisty->gutsy upgrades.
  * Move dbus-launch and its manpage from dbus-x11 to dbus proper. Add
    necessary Conflicts:/Replaces:. (LP: #118919)
