Bug Description

At least in Kubuntu 11.04, a user could go to systemsettings, then to "Locale" > "System Languages" and add another language.

In Kubuntu 12.10, a user goes to systemsettings, then to "Locale" and doesn't find the "System Languages" icon. He also doesn't find there a way to add another language, being forced to use English (if he can learn it). (*)

Also, using "kdesudo systemsettings" doesn't help, there the options seen in "Locale"... are the same.

Thanks!

(*) This is also because in Kubuntu 12.04 the notifier "language packs not entirely installed, should I install them?" does not appear, although this is another bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1074371/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

There are same kind of bug reports:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1066771
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1013626

bu not marking this as duplicate as the Kubuntu 12.10 language selector is broken in some cases. At here, the language selector is working as expected. The installation media was the mini.iso / MinimalCD: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QuantalQuetzal/ReleaseNotes/Kubuntu

By the http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?60590-Can-t-install-other-system-languages a workaround is to install the "kde-l10n-<language_code>" from the package manager.

I did as Sam Rog told, and I used this workaround: I went to the Muon Package Manager and installed the package kde-l10n-es. Then, in the new windows, the messages started to appear in Spanish, I could choose Spanish as the default package, etc.

What mini.iso? I've looked in http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/12.10/release/ and found only big isos. :-?

I don't really understand the problem. The separate tool was replaced with a more intuitive way of configuring the language, which is by using the existing languages tab, which now lists all available languages and install them on-demand. So what exactly is the problem?

The problem

The problem seems to be that in some cases the language selector only has a language (english) to select.

What mini.iso ?

From the "Installation": https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QuantalQuetzal/ReleaseNotes/Kubuntu -> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

At here the MinimalCD was working without problems: Picking the installation language as english and later the locale lingo from the KDE System Settings > Locale > Languages.

Only the language-pack-kde-en is installed.

The Muon is working.

Installation language: Finnish -> There are Finnish, US/GB English to pick from the KDE language selector.

is that after installation or in the live session?

Harald Sitter (apachelogger) wrote :

nevermind.

the problem is that the apt-xapian cache is not built (initially there is none) so the search for languages does not work. resolving this is however not particularly trivial from a UI perspective as this is an async operation that can take "a while" so some sort of visual indication needs to be introduced.

this issue has however a limited impact as many tools will trigger the update (among them the muon software center and if I am not mistaken also the updater).

At least, after installation I can't pick another language but English. It's a situation like in https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18824701/snapshot1.png

This bug was fixed in the package kde-runtime - 4:4.9.80-0ubuntu1

---------------
kde-runtime (4:4.9.80-0ubuntu1) raring; urgency=low

  [ Harald Sitter ]
  * Fix kubuntu_langpack_install.diff
    - Ensure xapian index is opened and created before searching (LP: #1074371)
      Also display a busy indicator overlay while working on the cache.
    - Map kde-l10n-* codes to kde's to language-pack-kde-* to make sure
      kdelibs can present a localized proper string for all languages and
      our install logic also installs packages where the ubuntu code is
      different (e.g. zhcn in kde-l10n is zh-hans in langpack)
    - Don't list installable languages which are already installed/selected
    - Disable the language selection UI while installing packages.
    - Use QLatin1String and QCharwhere appropriate
    - List languages based on kde-l10n-* rather than language-pack-kde-* as
      the logic with former is simpler and we know that the language has a
      reasonable quality from a KDE POV, while language-packs may be lingering
      around from when we used launchpad etc.
    - Add some kDebug to enable easier debugging when something goes wrong
    - Only issue qapt transactions (install) when we have something to install,
      otherwise leave qapt out of it entirely
    - Track qapt transaction errors and finishes as well as which language belongs
      to which transaction
      + Languages with a failed transaction are auto-deselected (e.g. the user
        did not authorize the transaction)
      + Only once all transactions are finished the selection UI is enabled again
      + Remaining packages marked for installation will be discareded once
        all transactions finished (if there are some left for whatever reason)
    - Prevent random crashes by only issuing language changes etc. once QAPT
      is done with all transactions

  [ Jonathan Riddell ]
  * New upstream beta release
  * Update .install files
