Bug Description

Binary package hint: ksysv

kcontrol->system administration->system services offers a nice way for kubuntu users to edit start up scripts. Except that it doesn't get it right.

For each service, there is a checkbox marked "Start during boot". This checkbox is unaware of /etc/init.d/rcS.d, and so services which actually *ARE* started at boot (eg udev) are marked as "Start at boot" -> "No". [Incidentally, the udev service is also marked as "not running", which is not true either]

[The runlevel in the kcontrol GUI that I am talking about is the default, i.e. 2]

This is how I fell victim to bug 63031: I saw that udev was not (apparently) starting at boot time, so I enabled it to do so. As a result, udev was actually started in rc2.d as well as rcS.d, and bad things happened.

P.S. I haven't filed this upstream with KDE - should I have?

The part that say: "[Incidentally, the udev service is also marked as "not running", which is not true either]" is bug #89580.

Confirming due to being able to reproduce the issue by seeing as certain services, such as udev, are actually running when they are reported as not running. Will research this further. Thanks!
