Bug Description

Running Kubuntu 7.10 64 on an AMD 64 X2 system with a Benq PF95G 19" LCD monitor.

Installing Kubuntu 7.10 64 selected the monitor and gave it right settings. So I wished to change the settings a little bit, from default 1280x1024 one step down to get a little bit larger letters on the screen. - I used the Systems settings - Monitor to do that. - As a result of that, I have got the settings down to 640x480 and lost the possibilities to set it back to 1280x1024. Also the frequency is sat down to 50Hz with no possibility to set it up again. - There is no info about the screen left in the info centre.

This must be the result of a bug somewhere in the System Settings software. How can I get around the problem and fix the settings back to installation values without rebooting the system?

Thank you for filing this bug, it's a bug in the displayconfig module. One way to work around it is to run `sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg` and answer the questions (mostly default, might want to set the resolution). You don't need to reboot the system, but you will need to log out and hit ctrl+alt+backspace to restart X.

Thank you for your kind replay! That solved the problem for me, but
there must be some more bugs in that part of the system. As I found at
the home page for Benq, the Benq FP95G had a resolution of 1280x1024,
but I was not able to get the resolution lower than 1440x...
May be an error at the Benq homepage, but ... Well, my main problem
about the screen settings are solved. Hopefully you find the bug(s)
which created the problem.

If you use displayconfig, active administrator mode, go to the hardware tab, click on configure, and select a generic Monitor/LCD with the desired resolution, does that work for you?

Thank you Scott for kind advice! But it did not work, there was no
Monitor/LCD named Benq PF95G in the list. I tried to select something
starting on PF 95, 951 to be precise. The hole system locked, had to
restart by brute force. Also, kdesu nvidia-settings with lowest possible
resolution and refresh <auto> led to lock of the system when trying to
get Firefox working. I had to use brute force to get it up running
again. So possibly I have to reload the system or try another 64 bits
distro to get around the problem.

What I suggested was trying a generic monitor/LCD with the resolution you
wanted. Not a different monitor of the same brand. Please try from generic.

Thank you for your kind help!

Well, I think I tried it, and got a message of that the size value
1280x1024 had not been tested on this monitor. So the system went into a
locked situation. I tried what I reported too. The system does not like
the standard setting for that monitor. At the moment I run it on
1024x768, may be this will stabilize the system without reinstalling it.
Also, though the view of the screen is not so clear as I hoped, at least
it is possible to read the letters on the screen with 1024x768 setting.
For me it looks like it has been used a font set with shadowing, and
they are almost not readable on the default setting as installed,
especially on a colored background.

Sorry, the system is unstable with screen size 1024x768 too. I started
Amarok playing in the background and tried different programs,
everything was working as it should. So I took up Firefox for reading a
newspaper. The screen locked after displaying the first page, though the
cursor was moveable. When Amarok was to display a new melody on the
screen it also stopped. What to look for before I try to install the
system again?

Displayconfig is unmaintained and nonexistent in Intrepid, so this won't be fixed.
