The problem is that kdbg < 2.2.2 does not play well with gdb 7.1 (I am guessing from your output that you were running that version of gdb) From the kdbg mailing list (

The 2.2.x series is still based on Qt 3 and KDE 3.

There is only one bug fix:

- An error message was shown instead of assembler code when gdb 7.1 was used.

I was having the exact trouble you described, so I upgraded to kdbg 2.2.2, and the problem was resolved.
