Right, there hasn't been a new upload since dapper, but this alone doesn't seem to be a sufficient reason for removing it?

      kdar | 2.0.6-0ubuntu3 | dapper/universe | source, amd64, hppa, i386, ia64, powerpc, sparc
      kdar | 2.0.6-0ubuntu3 | edgy/universe | source, amd64, hppa, i386, ia64, powerpc, sparc
      kdar | 2.0.6-0ubuntu3 | feisty/universe | source, amd64, hppa, i386, ia64, powerpc, sparc

Is it otherwise buggy/obsolete/etc?

And no, we don't remove packages from stable releases. :)

it doesn't build, and hasn't built with any of the last releases of dar. Doesnt seem like it will anywhere in the near future, either.

It is uninstallable on Edgy, so it seems illogical to keep it in the Edgy repos.

So kdar is being removed - such a pity. I guess that it doesn't matter too much as the package is not being developed anyway and updates are rare.

For Feisty - It is perfectly possible to install kdar manually by using Dapper libs found here (and to be installed in the same order):
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/libs/libdar3c2a
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/kde/kdar

I hope that current kdar users who are unaware of the removal will be
properly informed.

I can't help feeling guilty. Because I reported a bug in kdar, I
contributed in the _removal_ of a very nice piece of software that was
once the work of one or more passionate developers. Sometimes I wish I
hadn't added my comments to the bug report and just shut up my big
mouth... :-(

The reality is that KDar is unmaintained. That is the real problem. If
you could do something to fix it, great! Otherwise, let it broken and
uninstallable was of no help to anyone and I think it would be even more
annoying (why ship a package that is broken and unmaintained?).

Someone said that KDar could be kept around for a while as long as
someone volunteered to package and maintain libdar3c2a. First, that
person is nowhere to be seen. Second, upstream DAR is not maintaining
that library anymore, so any security issues would need to be tracked
and fixed by the packager.

I am sure Ubuntu would love to support as much software as possible but
their time/resources are limited, so it is better to focus on software
that is maintained upstream or that has a very dedicated packager
behind. I was myself a heavy user of KDar. Unfortunately, I don't have
the money to convince the developer of KDar to release a new version and
I don't have the available time to try to do it myself. If you really
love KDar and you think that there are more users like you, then build a
community around it and try to boost its development (or a least make it
build with a recent version of DAR). As long as there are people
*really* interested, nothing can stop them from do it. That is the
beauty of free software.

I know.
And if I had the time...
Perhaps if every day had 28 hours...

Hi,

a few days ago, 2008-05-11, version 2.1.0 of KDar was released.

This version compiles and runs fine with the current Ubuntu Hardy versions of libdar etc., fixing this issue.

Since KDar has some outstanding features (e.g. incremental backups in conjunction with forward error correction in
compressed and encrypted, multipart archive files), it would be really great to have kdar back as an Ubuntu package.

Please consider reintegrating KDar into Ubuntu Hardy.

@Ulrich:
Would you mind sharing how you managed to build kdar 2.1.0 from source?
I ran into the following:

sudo apt-get install libdar3c2a libdar-dev
tar -xvf kdar-2.1.0.tar.gz
cd kdar-2.1.0
./configure --enable-largefile
... then it eventually stopped at:
checking for libdar... configure: error: required library not found. Please install libdar.

Ulrich Lukas (ulrich-lukas) wrote :

Hi Motin,

you need to specify the version of libdar as a parameter to the configure-script.

The "INSTALL" file included in the release version says in line 52 et seqq.:

"Decide which libdar to use. You may have only one installed, e.g.
libdar64.so, and in that case specify --enable-mode=64 in configure.
Here are the various configurations:
  o libdar.so (default) : ./configure
  o libdar32.so : ./configure --enable-mode=32
  o libdar64.so : ./configure --enable-mode=64"

I had to choose --enable-mode=64, since the libdar Ubuntu package I use is "libdar64-4" (/usr/lib/libdar64.so).
It seems there is no "default" file or symbolic link "libdar.so" included in the Ubuntu package.

I also compiled the new KDar version 2.10 for use with Hardy Heron and have not had any problems with it. I would agree that KDar should be re-integrated into Ubuntu Hardy. It is a very usefull program.

This bug is about removing kdar, and it was closed ages ago. Please, open a new bug to ask for re-adding it.

Better yet, open an RFP bug (or even better: ITP) in Debian's BTS. Then it will be synced back to Ubuntu.
