I see the same problem here none of the keys in the keypad works. Either with num lock or without it.
I tried qt, gtk, and x11 (urxvt) apps.

Is a cheap ngs keyboard.

The same xorg.conf worked in breezy.

Are you experiencing this problem only in X, or at the Linux console too?

I've been having a similar (same?) problem on Gutsy. I thought an upgrade to Hardy would solve the problem, but it only got worse. The numpad stops working after a short while, as opposed to stopping working at random times, after a while (which is what I experienced in Gutsy). This is really annoying. I'm on a 64bit machine using a i386 installation and the bug can be seen only in X, not the console (the ctrl+alt+f6 mode). I've changed the keyboard so it's not it.

I newly got this problem on a i386 installation with Hardy. The num pad worked normally with Gutsy before the upgrade. And it appears to work good in the console.

Please check that the mouse keys is not enabled:

That worked for me, thanks! Mouse keys was on. The weird thing is it only started happening after I upgraded to Intrepid. Does Intrepid automatically select that option? Because I never changed anything...

I also experienced this after an upgrade to Intrepid.

The above fix worked for me (unchecking "Pointer can be controlled using the keypad").

I fixed it by System-> preference-> keyboard-> Layout -> chossing the right layout and click"Apply System-Wide..." and the number pad works.

Upgraded hary -> intrepid. Go to system ->Prefs->Keyboard->Mouse keys.
Pointer can be controlled is off.
Switch to on. Mouse works normally.
Num Lock is on.
8 moves mouse to left side of screen 0 (i have 4-head machine)
2 moves mouse down SLOW
6 is like 8.
4 is like 8
2 is like 8 but also moves mouse down.
num lock off
same behaviour.
now UNCHECK pointer can be controlled.
Oops! Mouse clicks dont work anymore. So you can nOT uncheck pointer can be.
Right click dont work either.
hmmm.
stuck.
I can just tab through this page and hit submit and press alt-ctrl-backspace to get to the login screen.

Login to X again. DONT USE THE NUMPAD!
Now you can uncheck the pointer can be again. If you use the numpad now, you can still mo ve the mouse but can not click anywhere (and thus also not uncheck that option.

Strange, Mouse Keys enabled it's self when I upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty, I didn't know about this features so I assumed that the keys were not working correctly

Same for me (mouse keys) after a normal (non-distribution) upgrade last night. Is there an easy way to find out which packages were updated when for me to post here?

Mouse Keys.. somebody needs to fix this before people start losing their
confidence in Ubuntu's ability to handle a standard input device

Weird... this happened to me too, except that I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. Not sure when exactly it stopped working though, as I don't use the num pad every day. I definitely did not enable the 'Mouse Keys' option myself, though. I noticed the num pad had randomly stopped working about a week ago.
