Bug Description

After having selected a langage from the installer splash (german), I backed out from the partitioner to select an appropriate keyboard layout (default was now german, but I am using a japanese keyboard). But when I selected (choose keyboard layout) or (choose language) I was allways presented with the partitioner again.

I can confirm this problem with the Flt 6 installer. I selected a Japanese 106-key keyboard, but the installer appears to default back to 101-intl. Further, once I complete the Ubuntu installation, I still can't get my 106-key JP keyboard recognized properly. From what I remember, this keyboard did work well in Breezy (after changing keyboard layouts in GNOME).

There are two workarounds necessary here:
first, if you don't choose a keyboard and language from the splash you are later presented with the correct menus to choose from (country, language and keyboard).
Later, if your keyboard settings in xorg.conf are "mixed" (I had pc105 and jp in there) you can correct this to jp106 (and jp), either manually or with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

So even choosing a language and keyboard from the splash, one should still be presented with all the menus (just defaulting to the guessed values).
And then, for japanese keyboards, we should get rid of the "pc105" entry in xorg.conf (maybe this does not occur when selecting japanese as language?).

Here's what I've experienced. As pointed out above, I cannot select a Japanese 106-key layout during the initial installation screen. That's one problem. However, since this doesn't have an immediate adverse effect on my installation, I complete installation. Then, using the GNOME menus to change my keyboard options, I try to choose the 106 Japanese keyboard. The selection doesn't seem to be recognized by the system. I test my keyboard in the space given...no change...still no Japanese 106 layout. From what I remember, changing to Japanese 106 in Breezy did work properly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in Jaunty as stated in the previous comment.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.
