Bug Description

Ubuntu 11.04
Gnome 2.32.1

I have 2 problems with Kate related to opening files. I have embedded my application menu in the gnome classic tool bar that pop up when I move my mouse on the top because my netbook does not have much screen space.

If I open a file with the "File->recent files" Menu, I can do it bout twice. Then the third time, the pull down menu does not work and it's impossible for me to open a file.

Now I cannot use the open button because of the following problem. If I click on open a file through the menu or the button, , it display an empty file open dialog for like 5-10 min before finally displaying something. It seems to happen when my computer has mounted a drive of my other computer with samba. It is probably checking for something and taking a lot of time.

It could have been fixed in more recent version of Kate, but considering that this combination of situation might not happen often, I thought it could be worth it to file a bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1115326/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in kate.

Well, the problem is that I don't know if it's a bug with gnome, samba or kate. Or maybe a combination of those. The only thing I can do is give you version numbers of my software which should lead to the right package. Here is the version numbers I missed supplying:

Kate: Version 3.6.5

As for samba, I don't have the version because what is weird is that apparently samba is not installed (cannot find smbd and smbstatus), but I am mounting a windows drive from the Fstab using the samba driver with this line and it works.

//solyane/eric /media/solyane smbfs iocharset=utf8,credentials=/home/ericp/.smbcredentials,uid=1000 0 0

Maybe it's because samba is only use to emulate a netbeui service but is not required to connect via netbeui to another computer.

Anyways, considering that this bug seems to be a combination of events that will not happen to a lot of people, I was not expecting the bug to be fixed anytime soon. I'll probably have to let time do the work.
