This affects kaffeine Version 1.0-pre2 using KDE 4.3.2 (KDE 4.3.2), under kubuntu karmic and xine lib version 1.1.16.

In order for the older version of Kaffeine to work with xine-vdpau, the "--without-xcb" build flag must be used. If the newer Kaffeine requires xcb to be disabled too, that could explain the problem.
I built an older Kaffeine that supposedly works fine in the ppa.
