Bug Description

Since Ubuntu 9.04 the WLAN Broadcom device with chipset BCM4322 isn't working with the LiveCD (in my case tested with 9.10 and 10.04 beta1 on LiveCD), only 9.04 works well.
Release: Ubuntu 10.04 beta1
Version: jockey-gtk 0.5.8-0ubuntu1
Expected: Running the LiveCD with supported WLAN device. No manual proprietary HW-driver installation on a LiveCD system with required reboot.
Happened: Additional proprietary HW-drivers (Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom-STA-WLAN-driver) were offered which could not be installed (errors during installation). Under Ubuntu 9.10 and under 10.04 beta1 the installation of above drivers crashes a LiveCD-USB-Stick.
Using a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop.

Hello to you....

There maybe some useful instruction on the following page concerning LiveCD and LiveUSB activation of the Broadcom b43/STA driver for your bcm4322 wireless adapter.

Hi Ian,
you are right, a similar procedure works under 10.04 beta 1 (but not under
9.10) with Live CD:
1. Install the bcmwl-kernel-source package using the *Synaptic Package
Manager*
2. Under the desktop menu *System > Administration > Hardware Drivers*, the
driver Broadcom-STA-WLAN-Driver have to be installed (the other offered b43
makes errors)
3. sudo modprobe -r ssb b43 wl
4. sudo modprobe wl
5. choose WLAN you want to use under Network connectivity

Haven't found the link, because I trusted the SEARCH of the help sites. Next
time I'll search a bit more manually ;-)

But if I want to shutdown, some errors occurs, the CD will be ejected and
nothing else happens (manually hold the power off necessary). It looks like
that the system has after above procedure problems to unmount mounted
devices and hangs after shutdown and eject. Looks like a workaround, not a
solution.
Nevertheless, a big THANX for your answer, definitely very helpful and
competent!

Stefan

I've checked the Ubuntu 10.04 beta2 LiveCD and there it is the same procedure as above, but step 3 must be:
3. sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb wl
because the b43 uses sbb, therefore b43 must be removed earlier.
Better is the clean shutdown in beta2, this works as expected and very quick.
Maybe the final release 10.04 will automatic support the WLAN Broadcom BCM4322, but it don't looks so, therefore the above procedure is the one which works.

Hi....

modprobe -r b43 ssb wl [DONE]

Thanks for that ^^

The bcm4322 is supported outof the box and has been since 9.10 karmic
koala. The b43 driver has been in the mainstream kerenel since 8.04
Hardy Heron however the bcm4322 is not properly supported by the b43.

Which is where the b43/STA hybrid (bcmw-kernel-source) driver comes in
to play.

So.... the b43 in the kernel (no good for you) and bcmwl-kernel-source
and all that is required has been included on the install disk as of
9.10 Karmic Koala.

The problem is the firmware for these drivers is closed source and
therefor will not be >>directly<< included out of the box.

b43-fwcutter is the tool used to extract the required firmware for the
kernel driver.

Its messy... alot of confusion and jockey not helping.

Thanks a bunch.

I'm using a HP 6735s laptop with the 10.04 Live-CD and this workaround helped a lot.
