Bug Description

I installed Netbook Remix with Wubi - dual boot with Windows XP. Everything works fine in windows, and almost everything works in Ubuntu, except wireless. Going to the hardware drivers screen (even when connected to wired internet) it says 'searching for drivers' and then gives me a message of 'No proprietary drivers are in use on this system'. Some other reports online say that driver options show up, but I have nothing - just a blank white box.

I went to the broadcom website and found the linux drivers for my card, but I have no idea how to install them.

My card is a Broadcom BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-E

When I do 'sudo lshw -class network' in terminal it shows up, so the OS can see the card.

I don't know what else to do. Definitely don't want to be tethered to a wire.

Try plugging into network via ethernet. Then go to System ->Administration->Hardware Drivers. Run tool and should prompt you to install new driver?

Thanks for your response but as I stated:

"Going to the hardware drivers screen (even when connected to wired internet) it says 'searching for drivers' and then gives me a message of 'No proprietary drivers are in use on this system'."

You may want to try the following:

1. Connect your Dell mini 10v to internet via ethernet.
2. install the following 2 packages: dkms and patch

sudo apt-get install dkms patch

3. Follow the instructions stated in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/jockey/+bug/443185/comments/35 to
load the latest bcmwl driver.

Hope the above works for you.

I connected via ethernet again. I ran the command you you stated "sudo apt-...." and got:

Reading Package Lists...Done
Building Dependency Tree
Reading state insformation...Done
E: Couldn't find package dkms

Tried two more times with "sudo apt-get install dkms" and "sudo apt-get install patch" - same result.

Your #3 comment seems helpful but I installed through Wubi so I don't know if it downloaded this file and if so, where it is stored.

Keep in mind that I have the proper drivers downloaded from the broadcom site. I just don't know how to install them. If you could tell me that process then I should be good to go. The driver file I have is 'hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz' I extracted it and got 2 folders (src & lib) and 'Makefile'. There's no .exe file like windows, and like I mentioned the hardware drivers screen gives me no options except 'close'. Need some direction.

Thanks

I have not tried the driver form the vendor you mentioned. But the included bcmwl driver does work for me. Could you give it another try. Here is a revised procedure for your reference:

1. Install dkms and patch through the included packages in the installation media:

dkms: pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.1.0.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb
patch: pool/main/p/patch/patch_2.5.9-5_i386.deb

2. Install the included bcmwl driver in pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_5.10.9...

3. Afterwards, please make sure in System->Administration->Hardware Drivers: the proprietary (STA) driver needs to be both "active" and "used" for the wireless to work.

Hope the above works.

Thanks for your help but understand that I'm still new to Linux. I looked in my directory and tried running the path in terminal - came up empty on both. I have no 'pool' folder anywhere. I have no dkms file anywhere.

Where do I find this pool folder? I tried taking a screenshot of my main directory to show you but the save windows never shows up. Also note that I have no access to the 'root' folder. It says I can't access it. No option for a password, etc. Any way to get around this?

I am at a loss as to how I'm supposed to find & install these drivers, even with your instructions. I need to know which tab to go to (or program), what to type, and what to look for. So far nothing is standing out as an obvious path to success.

Thanks

u.exp, FYI, I just tried another fresh Karmic installation through Wubi and have noticed that Hardware Driver could successfully discover the working driver (Broadcom STA) upon the first boot-up. Therefore, if you can afford it, please try to install Ubuntu again (where Wubi would grab the latest fixes in the process) or you may use Update Manager to download those possible fixes.

The pool folder is in the installation media, may it an installation CD or a USB disk made from karmic *.iso image.

To install the *.deb file, you may first locate it through the file manager and moue double-click on it to install it; in my case, the installation media is mounted as /media/my-disk, and the pool directory can be found in /media/my-disk/pool

Hope the above helps.
