Bug Description

Binary package hint: b43-fwcutter

Trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on Asus a6000 for second time, after failing to get wireless connetion working first time round. During installation, message "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
BroadbandnB43 wireless driver.
After pressing activate button it comes back with "System error: InstallArchives()failed" despite being connected to internet by ethernet cable.

Didn't have any problems with 8.04, but gave up Ubuntu after trying unsuccessfully to update to 9.04. Seems 9.10 may have the same problems. Strangely, I use EEEbuntu 8.04 on my AsusEEE without problems, but if I update to 9.04 it doesn't work.....

Hi,
Just to say I fixed the wireless connection problem in Ubuntu 9xx by connecting to the internet via an ethernet cable, and (re)installing the driver through Synaptics (search "B43" brought up B43-fwcutter_012-1_i386.deb).
Can't understand why this driver isn't installed correctly during the installation process.......
I now have to fix another problem involving rubbish display colours and definition.
Nearly there...............Thanks, Kaspin

Hi Raul,
I'm a newbie, so probably can't help much. But I had a similar problem after a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 on my Asus a6000. All I did was to connect an ethernet cable to my laptop so as to have an internet connection. After installing all available updates and rebooting, I opened Synaptics, searched for "b43" and found that "b43-fwcutter_012-1_i386.deb" was allegedly installed. However I marked it for re-installation and after that it worked fine!

This is a known issue. The b43 driver requires firmware which can't be distributed with Ubuntu, you can only download it when you have an alternate internet connection.
See this wiki page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/b43
and bug 218922.

Changed in b43-fwcutter (Ubuntu):

The OP clearly states that he had an "alternate internet connection" (through ethernet). I can/could confirm the bug - you had to force the reinstallation of the kernel-bc<something>-sources for the "proprietary drivers dialog" to work - but unfortunately (or not) I don't have a notebook the with bc43 hardware anymore.
