Just another data point: I recently got an HP dm1 with a Broadcom 4312. After struggling with various options to get the wifi to work, I fired up jockey-gtk and activated first the b43 driver, which didn't work, and then the STA, which brought up a new interface (eth3). The computer froze when trying to configure it with wicd, but after a reboot, everything worked.
