Bug Description

Jockey does not show any driver proprietary or no, even though nvidia-glx-185 is installed and in use.

I use Karmic and every package is freshly updated just now.

NvidiaDetector is provided by nvidia-common which you likely do no have installed.

summary: - jockey does not show any drivers
+ jockey does not show nvidia drivers

I have 2 systems, one running Karmic and one running Jaunty, that have jockey-common installed and ubuntu-desktop but do not have nvidia-common installed. Since the import of NvidiaDetector fails the nvidia proprietary drivers are never recommended by jockey. I think the Recommends of nvidia-common should be moved to a Depends.

Changed in jockey (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Triaged
Martin Pitt (pitti) wrote :

nvidia-common isn't necessary for jockey to run, so a recommends is just fine. I got complaints in the past that nvidia-common couldn't be uninstalled even though the machine didn't even have nvidia hardware.

Changed in jockey (Ubuntu Karmic):
importance: High → Medium
status: Triaged → Won't Fix
Changed in jockey (Ubuntu):
status: Triaged → Incomplete

Since nivdia-common is installed by default, and also recommended (which are also installed by default), did you uninstall it?

wensveen (wensveen) wrote :

nvidia-common is indeed not installed. I don't recall uninstalling it, but I won't claim I didn't. I have been upgrading since Edgy or Feisty (don't remember). Also, I sometimes turn off the option to install recommended packages by default when I think there are huge amounts of packages I don't need.

I'll install nvidia-common and see if that works, when I get home tonight.

After installing nvidia-common, jockey works as expected. Since nvidia-common is recommended by jockey-common, I guess this bug report is invalid? Thanks for all the help.

As I had multiple systems missing recommended packages, and after speaking with Michael Vogt, I submitted a bug regarding update-manager and the missing recommended packages. That is bug 459443.
