Can you please start the driver manager and then attach /var/log/jockey.log? Did you use jockey for installing the nvidia driver, or did you install it by downloading from nvidia.com?

I've installed it from the Ubuntu repository using Synaptic.

OK, thanks. Please attach the log then, after running the hardware drivers window once.

Ah, there we go:

  ImportError: No module named NvidiaDetector.nvidiadetector

Apparenlty you uninstalled the nvidia-common package. This will make jockey's nvidia handler non-functional; it shouldn't display the nvidia module at all in this case.

Changed in jockey (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: Incomplete → Triaged
summary: - jockey-gtk shows lacense as "free software" for apparently non-free
- nvidia driver
+ nvidia shown as "free" if proper handler is not available
