Bug Description

Binary package hint: jockey-common

I was trying to activate the ATI/AMD proprietary FLGRX graphics driver through the Hardware Drivers application on Jaunty (which I upgraded directly from a clean CD install of Intrepid) . A dialog saying "downloading ..." came up, but no progress was made for a while (despite the fact that System monitor said that the network card was downloading furiously from the Internet.) I went to lunch. When I came back, there was a message box saying,

"Sorry, the Jockey backend crashed. Please file a bug at:

  ubuntu-bug jockey-common

Trying to recover by restarting backend."

Apt-cache says: Installed: 0.5-0ubuntu10

I have the same problem in Ubuntu 9.04 when trying to install the Broadcom B43 wireless driver.
I tried using the terminal interface for jockey, and this is what happened:

$ jockey-gtk --list
firmware:b43 - Broadcom B43 wireless driver (Free, Disabled, Not in use)
pkg:sl-modem-daemon - Software modem (Proprietary, Enabled, In use)
$ jockey-gtk --enable="firmware:b43"

Then a popup box asked me for my password.
About a minute later I got an error saying:

Sorry, the Jockey backend crashed. Please file a bug at:
  ubuntu-bug jockey-common
Trying to recover by restarting backend.

In case anyone is having the same problem as I am, here's what worked for me:

sudo /usr/share/b43-fwcutter/install_bcm43xx_firmware.sh

After running the above command and restarting my system my wireless was working perfectly. Note that this solution is specific to installing the b43 driver for bcm43xx wireless cards and not necessarily relevant to the original post. However, after running the above command jockey correctly displayed that the wireless driver had been installed.

On my system this is also the case when enabling the broadcom drivers.

Trying to recover by restarting backend.

I think it has to do that the openwrt website is down, where the firmware is fetched from, so after a couple of retries it hangs!
although b43-fwcutter is installed!

terminal:
dpkg-reconfigure b43-fwcutter #let me download again the firmware

This happened to me also. I had it working just fine the first go around. The second time I had to redo my setup, screwing around and got to deep to fix, and I decided to do the midiubuntu Mutimedia setup before adding anything. After doing the multimedia setup I then tried to do the amd/ati driver but go the: Sorry, the jockey backend crashed. Please file a bug at: ubuntu-bug jockey-common. I am not sure it was the multimedia setup since I did also update. I will try to redo, yup, the setup again with a step by step approach and see what works. Oh! I am going to check out the b43-fwcutter also.

Apparently you can not edit the report so here is what I did. I went back and decided to try to run the Hardware Driver program again. This time it ran and removed a driver, sorry it did it so fast that I did not catch which one, it then installed the right driver. This did not activate the ati/amd driver though. I decided to click on activate again and see what would happen it reinstalled the driver and now all works.

I'm having the same issue with the jockey-backend while trying to activate the ATI/AMD proprietary FLGRX graphics driver. How do you reinstall the driver?

I got this bug when trying to activate the FLGRX graphics driver. Following the directions here http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Jaunty_Installation_Guide#HOW_TO_REMOVE_DRIVER I removed all the old drivers and reinstalled the ATI drivers manually and everything seems to be working fine now.
