progress bar does not show download progress

When I install the nvidia driver using the Hardware Drivers tool, I select the 173 as suggested by the tool and hit enable. Then a window pops up which is supposed to show progress of the download and install of the card.

* Firstly, the progress bar shows nothing about the progress of the download - stays blank until the actual install

* Secondly, when it gets to 100% it just stops there (gtk jockey crashed too while doing this - a bug already reported)

I know from previous experience that the nvidia driver is now installed, but somebody new to the system would be wondering what is happening...

What should have occurred:
When the progress window appears it should immediately start to indicate the progress of the download and when the install is done it should close and a message should appear saying the nvidia driver is now installed - please reboot.

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

I downloaded the Ubuntu Beta of 8.10 over Thursday evening - ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso,

Did a fresh install of that and all the updates and then decided to get the nvidia working
(I dual-boot with XP and once nvidia is installed the screen position remains the same in both boots).

The progress bar not appearing early enough is very similar to bug 279073, which is why I'm marking this as a duplicate. The "just stops at 100%" sounds like the result of jockey crashing. If you still get it with the current intrepid version, can you please submit the crash through the crash reporting system which pops up? This will create a new bug report. Thank you!
