The crash happened after an update using the update manager and then restarting my system. I went to compiz to enable desktop effects. It brought up a notification that ATI 3D drivers were needed. The Restricted Drivers icon showed up in the gnome-panel. I clicked on it and began trying to install those drivers. The install failed and I got the notice that jockey-gtk had crashed. That initiated this automatic bug report. Hope this helps. Thanks for all you do for Ubuntu. :)

Confirmed, I experienced the same crash when attempting to install the open source ATI driver via jockey. Going to "Appearances" and attempting to enable extra desktop effects triggers jockey, which will then attempt to install the ATI drivers, and crashes unexpectedly.

System type appears to be same as original except no fglrx.

Confirmed as well. I can't seem to install the restricted Ati drivers because Jockey breaks with the above mentioned error. Interestingly enough, Envyng has the same problem. I tried reinstalling a lot of the python files, but it didn't seem to make any difference. In my case, I was attempting to upgrade from Hardy. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro.

problem is that their is no compatable ati driver for xorg 7.4 yet so i would assume that until sti releases one supporting xorg7.4 this problem will not be fixed

Interesting error. I believe jockey should not even present you with a driver for intrepid at this moment. ATI/AMD has not released any driver that supports X.Org 7.4 / X Server 1.5.0 yet.

Support for X.Org 7.4 / X Server 1.5.0 and linux kernel 2.6.27 is expected to arrive by the end of october from AMD. So lets hope Catalyst 8.10 will be released before Ubuntu 8.10 goes final.

Btw, open source drivers for 2D is already included into intrepid.

I tested also with an nvidia quadro fx3400/4400 but it still didn't help at
all. With an nvidia driver installation, the whole machine just dies. Vesa
drivers don't work either.

It crashes because apt complains that you have packages on hold (or some which cannot be upgraded due to conflicts, etc.). Jockey should display that error instead of crashing.
