metacity crashes when compositing_manager is disabled

Bug Description

First enable metacity instead of compiz by setting visual effects to None in Appearances. Then run gconf-editor, go to apps->metacity->general, enable compositing_manager, then disable compositing_manager, metacity appears to crash. A ctrl-alt-backspace is required.
