The game open arena intermittently hangs the system on ubuntu 11.10

The issue happens intermittently not always.

When I start Open arena, sometimes it shows a blank screen and I loose control of the keyboard.

The only way to gain control of the keyboard and the system is by restarting Ubuntu.
