Bug Description

New upstream release fixes the following, and many more:

* bug #898538 <inkscape fails to build with glib 2.31>
* bug #496793 <ctrl c ctrl v of text in edit mode crashes inkscape>
* bug #885324 <Completely replace lcms1 by lcms2 in Ubuntu>
* bug #168417 <parameters ending with '\' causes python to bomb>
* bug #668895 <Extensions with <check> tags fail to load>
* bug #788560 <ESC doesn't cancel move when using the Node Tool>
* bug #884368 <unable to edit attributes in Inkscape XML Editor (Ubuntu overlay-scrollbar issues)>
* bug #902054 <Some layers should be visible by default in Layers dialog>
* bug #909958 <Path Effect List is hidden>
* bug #910467 <Input Devices > Hardware > Tree of devices is hidden>
* bug #910479 <Glyphs Font styles are hidden>
* bug #911079 <Error messages from Extensions hidden>
* bug #911123 <Messages dialog doesn't work>

It would be great to get this into Precise. The Debian maintainer hasn't uploaded any updates in the last year, so we should go ahead with the upgrade ourselves rather than waiting for a Debian sync.

Bumping to "High" importance and targeting Precise Beta 1 because this fixes the FTBFS issue reported in bug #898538, and this is a package in the Main component of Ubuntu.

I don't see 0.48.3 advertised here yet: http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=en
Did you keep all the existing Ubuntu packaging changes in the merge - LP code browse is apparently down, I cannot see it.

Hi Jani,

We won't be advertising the latest upstream version on the Inkscape website until binary packages are widely available. However, you can find the 0.48.3 source package on the Launchpad page for inkscape[1].

In terms of Ubuntu packaging:
* I dropped the 02-add-shebangs-and-fix-permissions patch because it has been accepted upstream
* I got rid of the specific versions of the libwpg/libwpd Build-Depends because Inkscape now happily builds against any version of the libraries. This will make it easier if/when we decide to backport Inkscape 0.48.3 to Lucid/Maverick.

Please let me know if there are any other queries.

I see there's an even newer patch release available already, 0.48.3.1
If Ted Gould or other Ubuntu developers with upload rights are involved upstream I'd rather defer to them handling this further.

0.48.3.1 simply contains fixes for a few older distros with old gtkmm versions. I verified Alex's work builds fine on precise without it.

Would be nice to have just for completeness but won't have any tangible effect for us, and I don't see it as worth holding up this sponsor request.

Thanks Bryce,

I'll try to sort out the 0.48.3.1 upgrade soon if no one else beats me to it. We'll need it if we want to backport to Maverick & Lucid without source changes.
