Bug Description

If I open two SVG files from Nautilus (right-click -> open with Inkscape), one
after the other, then I am unable to paste something from one to the other.

This behavior is also true for starting Inkscape from the Applications-Menu. However it does _not_ happen if you create a new window from within the first window.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This is a upstream problem, the releavant bugreport is:

As a workaround (as Josh suggested) try working in a single instance of inkscape (also I see the problem here, there is no way to tell if two windows are a single or multiple instances).

The copy/paste bug as filed upstream is part of the problem.

But shouldn't the command described in the original report open two windows of a single instance of Inkscape?

I think this would be a seperate bug. It seems that inkscape lacks support for this.

First, I can confirm this is still present in Edgy, 0.44-1ubuntu1.

I think considering this report, I would be inclined to go with Michael Vogt, that this is two issues:

The Menu/Nautilus opening of files should perhaps open a new window in the current running instance of inkscape.

And also inkscape should place something on the clipboard - perhaps XML? That may be a non-trivial thing to fix, and may be closer to a new feature than bug in terms of the development effort.

I was going to report a _new_ bug but found my report was a dupe -- so I'll post it here:

The "[Copy]/[Paste]" does not work across different instances (windows) of Inkscape0801171812

I installed http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape0801171812.7z and have it registered and my program of choice to open and edit ".svg" files.

When I am editing multiple ".svg" files each one is opened in a seperate instances of Inkscape, NOT seperate windows within ONE instance of Inkscape).

If I select a vector drawing (not a simple bitmap) and "[Edit][Copy]" it then I am able to "[Edit][Paste]" it _within_ the _same_ drawing windows (IE: this part works OK).

If I select a vector drawing (not a simple bitmap) and "[Edit][Copy]" it then I am NOT able to "[Edit][Paste]" it to a different instance of Inkscape running in a different windows NOR am I able to grab the object and drag it from one instance's windows to another running copy (IE: this is BROKEN).

I suspect that the way the object is being saved in the Window's clipboard is not correct.

If I "[Edit][Copy]" a bitmap object in "Window's Paint" and then "[Edit][Paste]" it into Inkscape it is transfered over OK. If I leave it selected in Inkscape, "[Edit][Copy]" it and attempt to "[Edit][Paste]" it back into "Window's Paint" the "[Paste]" menu choice is greyed out and it won't paste back (CTRL-V also does not help).

Every other graphics program I have can transfer simple bitmaps back and forth using the clipboard. I appreciate that I should not expect a ".svg" file to paste into "Window's Paint" (since it does not support that format of data) but if Inkscape stored ".svg" vector, ".wmf", and bitmap versions of the drawing in the clipboard then the receiving program could choose what it was capable of accepting.

It would be great if Inkscape worked with Xara ".svg" format also.
