Inkscape systematically crashes when importing pdf image via poppler

Bug Description
Seen on Kubuntu 15.04.
Applications should not crash. Poppler import functionality is described as working on OSX and other Linux distros, so the issue may be specific to ubuntu. In case, either fix or please disable poppler import altogether.

Could you please test it on a newer ubuntu release with a newer inkscape? A lot changes on both (including poppler version). Ubuntu 16.04 would do, but it would be nice if you could also test the latest inkscape 0.92.1 on Ubuntu 17.04.
