Bug Description

I am using Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome Shell 3.6.2, and Inkscape Version 0.48.

Click on Circle tool and drop one on canvas.
Then hold down CTRL and LEFT SHIFT keys simultainously, while hovering over just dropped circle.
Then click LEFT mouse button.

RESULT: Automatically logged out from Ubuntu. All running work is lost.

The circle tool is INOPERABLE.

Latest update on problem: Killing Overlay scroll bar causes the problem.

If you place this command in your .xprofile file of your home folder:

export LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 .... to kill overlay scroll bars, and thus have the tradition scroll bars come back,

you will have this Inkscape problem with the tool bars, that is, you get logged out.

Omitting this command, and thus sustaining with overlay scroll bars, allows everything to work fine in Inkscape.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: OVERLAY SCROLL BARS, are a very bad idea for a desktop environment, they are unproductive, and get in the way of working efficiently. That is, try right resizing a window with them, while using a mouse, you can not grab the right edge of the window to resize, for they get in the way.

Reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.3.1 and 0.48.4 (X11- as well as Quartz backend), but not with current trunk (r12183) on OS X 10.7.4 (64bit).

Steps:
1) launch inkscape (default prefs), new document
2) draw an ellipse (not a circle!)
3) 'Shift+Ctrl+LMB click' on one of the two square ellipse knots
-> crash

Not reproduced with any tested version (stable, trunk) and either backend of GTK+ on OS X 10.7.4 (X11, Quartz) - likely a different issue than originally reported (could be bug #1081108).

Since you already drew your conclusions (blaming Ubuntu's custom scrollbars), I'm not going to further triage the report for project 'Inkscape': There are no overlay scrollbars on OS X in play, yet the crash as originally reported is reproducible with latest stable versions (0.48.3.1, 0.48.4), using either available backend of GTK+ on OS X (X11, Quartz). It no longer occurs with current trunk builds -> wrt to Inkscape, a fix has already been committed.

Note NOT taken: The project 'Inkscape' (for which this report was originally filed) has nothing to do with Canonical's design decisions for Ubuntu/Unity.

@Dorian: Actually right-resizing with them is really easy. They're designed so you can grab them to resize the right side of the window... don't worry about grabbing the window itself, grab the overlay scrollbar and drag it right/left.

Apologies if I overreacted in my earlier comment - attaching the backtrace from current stable branch (Inkscape 0.48.4 r9945):

Crash produced by these steps:
1) launch inkscape (default prefs, new default document)
2) click on the 'Ellipse' tool in the toolbox on the left
3) draw an ellipse (i.e. x- and y-radius differ)
4) press 'Shift+Ctrl' and click on the left square knot of the ellipse

-> inkscape crashes, instead of resizing the ellipse to a circle (x- and y-radius equal)

So far, I haven't been able to reproduce this with current trunk builds.

Reverting prior status change - needs further investigation.

X.org crash (logout) as described not reproduced in Ubuntu 12.10 (VM, 64bit, host: OS X 10.7):
- Unity, with overlay scrollbars enabed
- Unity, with overlay scrollbars disabled for launched application only
- Gnome, with overlay scrollbars disabled via ~/.xprofile as described

My apologizes, for the purposes of completeness, I should have added that I am using 64 bit Ubuntu too.
