Boot of both ubuntu-mate and lubuntu/lxqt (both 18.04) with kernel 4.15.0-10 in virtualbox:

Boot starts correctly until the boot screen appears; continues to boot for the fraction of a second. Then screen becomes black. System tries again to come up to the boot screen several times. Then stops completely.

No such problems with 4.13.0-36.

No such problems with mainline kernel, version 4.15.4 and/or 4.15.5: both boot correctly.

When I execute privileged `apt-get upgrade -y` on my Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver instance in VirtualBox, the overall command fails during update-initramfs with an apparent omission of the recursive flag to the copy file utility.
