Bug Description

This is a weird one. Shortly after moving to 17.10, my laptop has started dimming its internal screen to minimum brightness at the start of initramfs execution. shortly thereafter it restores it to normal brightness, but that only happens *after* typing in encrypted filesystem passwords, so the password dialogues are practically invisible. Not sure why its doing this, but whatever's restoring the brightness should do it before prompting for filesystem mounting so these prompts are actually visible.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I can't test with the upstream kernel, as I'm using a ZFS root vol and the ZFS modules don't build against that kernel.

That's because rootfs has systemd-backlight@.service to restore/save the brightness value. Probably a good idea to do the same for initramfs.
