Update:

- I had an almost full /boot:
After cleaning it and running update-mkinitramfs (which completed ok) I did:
dpkg --configure -a

This finished ok.

Then rebooted.

I am on 14.04 now. Seems ok now.
sudo apt-get update works
sudo apt-get upgrade works.
