I upgraded directly. The option appeared as a default option, since I'm not
used to do upgrades using the GUI I accepted its suggestion, the strange
thing for me was not seeing 15.10 as an option. I though that 15.10 was not
supported and I was ok with that.

Before rebooting I installed the systemd-sysv and init , and with this I
moved on. (reboot command not was available, :) )

I'm upgrading to 15.10 now. Which I guess was not supported coming from
14.04 either.

I reproduced this bug with 2 different setups while doing a system upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS.
1) In software & updates - Updates - Notify me of a new Ubuntu version - For any new version
2) run software updater, select upgrade

systemd-sysv and init fails to install, broken dependency causing more packages not installed. And the system will not boot again.

If this particular action leads to problems, why not block the upgrade in first place?

I don't think this duplicates #1032823. Had the same problem while upgrading from 14.04 to 15.04 (which is apparently a direct upgrade path now, rather than the update manager doing 14.04 to 14.10 first). Have to manually install the systemd-sysv package to be able to reboot the server at all.

To recover a machine affected by this issue:

* I followed the instructions in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCdRecovery#Update_Failure

* sudo dpkg --configure -a

* sudo apt-get install systemd-sysv init

In my case, this bug happen while upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04.

I've checked Apttermlog.txt more carefully, and it seems to be caused by a circular dependency:

systemd-sysv < systemd < libcryptsetup4 < libdevmapper1.02.1:amd64 < dmsetup < libdevmapper1.02.1

The upgrade will continue but the '/var/cache/apt/archives/systemd-sysv_229-4ubuntu4_amd64.deb' package may not be in a working state. Please consider submitting a bug report about it.

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get install systemd-sysv

Same issue when upgrading from 14.04.4 to 16.04, with this message when doing an 'apt-get -f install':
Initializing machine ID from D-Bus machine ID.
Failed to mount /etc/machine-id: Not a directory

Moving /etc/machine-id away and recalling apt-get -f install does the trick
